PURPOSE
This demo will help you learn how to configure an ArcGIS GeoBIM solution for exploring building
information modeling (BIM) models, engineering documents, and project management issues in a
geographic context to analyze risks, costs, and timelines. Demonstrate how GeoBIM can help your
customer manage data by automatically georeferencing BIM documents, construction issues, and
projects into hosted feature layers in ArcGIS Online.
ArcGIS GeoBIM provides new capabilities to integrate and visualize GIS data side-by-side with
engineering documents to make coordinated decisions across project teams.
DATA SOURCES AND DESCRIPTION (Refer to Data Distribution Permission statement at the end of this
document)
Highlands Ranch was renamed from the Morpheus dataset provides by Autodesk, Inc. This is a fictional
rail development project from the Mineral Station RTD rail line up and across C-470 and ending at
the Children’s Hospital. Includes all reference information from Autodesk including: Architecture;
Civil Structures; Drainage, MEP; Parking Garage; Rail; Roadway; Shared, Site Grading, Structural
Bldg.; and Survey & Utilities. Data permission rights granted to Esri by Autodesk. See Project
Statement #2 to the Joint Marketing Agreement signed 6/24/2021 between Esri and Autodesk (Esri
Agreement No. 00274470.5) which gave Esri permission to use the following Autodesk data for
marketing and training activities relating to the launch of ArcGIS GeoBIM.
DEMO SETUP
See separate setup script.
Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) is constantly building for the future. To plan & design,
our best approach is to look through the lens of a Digital Twin.
Digital Twins allow us to build more sustainably: to plan better use of resources, design resilient cities
and infrastructure, and perform analysis and predictive maintenance – reducing costs and project
timelines.
Building Information Models, or BIM, supply detailed information about built assets, whereas GIS
provides information about assets in the context of the Built & Natural environment. BIM provides
content, while GIS provides context.
The problem is that there’s no easy way to bring BIM & GIS together and share it with all the project
stakeholders. As a result, project teams spend a lot of time sending content back and forth, which
wastes time & duplicates data in multiple systems. Together, this decreases project profitability.
ArcGIS GeoBIM solves this problem by bridging the gap between your BIM and GIS systems. GeoBIM lets
you connect data from Autodesk & ArcGIS and share this data together in configurable, easy-to-use web
experiences. This allows AEC professionals to find, manage, and share information quickly to keep
project teams moving forward.
Highlands Ranch in Colorado is a massive community – in fact, it’s the largest HOA (homeowner
association) in America. The buildings we see in the distance are almost all residential.
Like this Urgent Care facility that’s recently been built. Being linked directly to our BIM project, …
We can use the Document Browser to quickly pull up other documents associated with this Revit file.
• Click Thumbnails, then click second one to open it; close Document Browser with X
• Rotate the Ground Floor Revit file, then close the Autodesk pane
• Close the popup
• Zoom out to approximately the view in below screenshot
We can look at all of our facilities at once – giving us a clear picture of how these designs all come
together. We have a hospital, urgent care, and Civic Center in our Highlands Ranch project.
Let’s look a little closer at the Civic Center. They’ve made some progress on this building.
Now we’re able to see our BIM360 documents associated with this asset.
• Click on R21 Civic Center - MEP.rvt in Link Explorer to open in Autodesk pane
Since we’ve linked these assets in GIS and BIM, now we’re zoomed directly to the equipment we’ve
selected in the map. With Dynamic links, it’s always the most up to date content being referenced.
When the HVAC system was being installed, they were even able to pull up the installation manual from
GeoBIM. We can keep all of our content in one place and share with stakeholders to save everyone
time.
• Open the Document Browser, go to Thumbnails, scroll and show all the pages
• Close Autodesk pane
• Close popup of roof HVAC
You may have noticed the colorful icons (red and blue cones) in the map – these are Issues in the
project.
The great part of GeoBIM is the ability to put these Autodesk Issues on the map. And we can create
Issues in GeoBIM
• Switch to Dashboard
We can see there’s a safety Issue in the Dashboard, we want to address Safety Issues right away.
This one is over by the pond; it doesn’t look like any assets are there. Let’s look closer and exactly what’s
happening here.
• Close popup
• Rotate map to look under the ground
Navigating underground, we can see there IS an issue with this pipe – it isn’t connected to the rest of the
network.
Being able to view this all together helps prevent more serious problems that could result from this pipe
issue.
Optional – Create new Issue in GeoBIM. (Refer to the setup document, page 18, if necessary.)
From ArcGIS Online, we can bring in additional data for context – like the building footprints for Denver.
We can add imagery from ArcGIS Online, or add our own drone imagery to monitor project progress.
• To switch to the 2D map, click the map thumbnail in the lower left of the Scene view.
• Click on the black arrow icons on the sides and bottom of the Map view to hide the Dashboard,
Documents and Forge Viewer widgets.
• Bookmark > Buildings
What would a 5-minute drive-time to Urgent Care look like on the map?
It looks like the Urgent Care facility is reaching quite a lot of people in the area – we can see how many
communities are in the drive-time polygon. But how many people should we plan for?
Using geo-enrichment in ArcGIS Online, we can select variables like Population, Spending, Income…
we’ve selected predictive variables here so we can plan for the future specifically for this drive-time
area.
• Zoom in and click on the drive time polygon to see popup with enriched variables
By using ArcGIS GeoBIM we’ve been able to View our facilities on the map,
ArcGIS GeoBIM delivers an innovative, easy-to-use web-based experience for project teams to explore
and collaborate on BIM projects and issues using data from multiple systems in a geospatial context.
This enables us to save time, reduce costs, empower teams, and reduce conflicts by giving them access
to current and future project activity.
With GeoBIM, we’ve enhanced our Digital Twin - Connecting Projects in Context.
