Class Project: Pull colour from fabric with Oxyclean

Process:

- Washed fabric samples in washing machine with warm water, soap and 1
scoop of Oxyclean
- Melted Oxyclean in boiling water before adding to machine
- Poured Oxyclean solution through a wet sieve to filter chunks and break up
any chunks before adding to machine
- Turned back washing machine three times (washing time should be at least
40 minutes, so we ran 4x11 minute washes)
- Rinsed twice in clear water, then dried fabric in dryer

Notes on this process:

5 fabric samples used for this project. The fabric we used was four cellulose samples
(dyed cotton of various colours and prints) and one dark wash denim sample.
Results were a light tech or slightly faded effect.

- Ran through one cycle in the washing machine (11 mins)
- Machine rinsed twice, then dried fabric in dryer

Notes on this process:

Discharge as visual texture:

My 2 samples were done with potassium permanganate full strength recipe with
citric acid added on top of them.
Fabrics used: Black Cotton Sheet and Black Cord/Velveteen Material
Source for Potassium Permanganate: Xenex Labratories in Coquitlam

Process:

- Washed fabrics
- Pre-wet fabrics were immersed in full strength potassium permanganate dip
for one minute
- Aired until colour changed from pink to brown
- Washed fabrics
- Brushed/sprinkled on small amounts of citric acid discharge agent onto my
fabrics, to create a visual texture.
- Aired until colour in fabric started pulling/lightening
- Rinsed, washed, rinsed and used blow dryer to dry.
Notes on this process:
Results were a noticeable tech or clearly faded effect of overall material. Spots
where citric acid was used look bleached. For safety: I protected my eyes with
safety goggles when dipping in P.P.
