CHAPTER III Research Methodology This chapter presents and describes the research design, sampling design, instrumentation,

data gathering procedures and data analysis plan use in the study.

Research Design The researchers will utilize quantitative research design which deals with objectivity, tight controls over the research situation and the ability to generalize findings and use the noexperimental quantitative design to describe the relationships of the demographic profiles of students in selected colleges who are at risk of internet addiction. Respondents will be selected using simple stratified random sampling.

Sampling Design The researches will utilize the Stratified Random Sampling Method, a type of probability sampling method, wherein the population can be divided into strata or subgroups, and a random sample is taken from each stratum. Students from selected colleges who are enrolled in Academic Year 2011-2012 with selected four year course are identified to include for the study. The year level/college in which the sample size is derive from using the simple stratified random sampling. Slovens formula is use in computing for the sample size of each year level.

Instrumentation The instrument that will utilize is modified by researchers and validated by an expert entitled ``Internet Addiction Test``. It was based on the Internet Addiction Test developed by Dr. Kimberly Young which is reliable and valid measure of addictive use of internet. It consist of 20 items that measures mild, moderate, and severe level of internet addiction. The first page of questionnaires includes the introductory letter to the respondents and the demographic profile of students in selected colleges which compromises age, gender, civil status, units enrolled, course and section, frequency and duration of internet use and followed by the 20 modified questions. The students will ask to answer each question as to six choices: a.) Not applicable b.) Rarely c.) Occasionally d.) Often e.) Frequent f.) Always

However, the basis for scoring was included in the questionnaire itself since the respondents maybe so keen on answering the tool truthfully.

Data Gathering Procedure 1. Obtain consent from Dean of selected colleges. 2. Obtain the total population of students from the registrars office of selected colleges enrolled in A.Y 2011-2012 with selected four year course. 3. Compute for the sample population for each college, using Sloven`s formula. 4. Researchers use Stratified Random Sampling Method wherein the population is divided into strata or subgroups and a random sample is taken from each stratum. y y y y y y Sample size will be obtained from each year level of selected colleges. Check the availability of schedule of respondents and researchers. Set the date of data gathering. Respondents will be asked to answer the questionnaire. The questionnaires that were gathered by the researchers will be edited. Questionnaires gathered by the researchers with two or more unanswered questions will be rejected.

Research Analysis Plan 1. To determine t he level of risk among the demographic profile of students in selected college will be answered by frequency and percentage distribution. Formula: R = HV- LV %f =

2. To determine the level of risk for internet addiction when grouped according to college will be answered by getting the sum of the scores of items answered by the respondents. Score 1-19 20-49 50-79 80-100 Qualitative Interpretation Limited usage; no significant problems in life Average user; control over usage Experiencing frequent problems because of internet Causing significant problem in life

Computed results will be interpreted using the above. To determine the risk level of year level/college the arithmetic mean will be: Formula:

Where: n = the number of respondents in each year level = average score of each level 3. To determine the difference between will be answered using t-test: Formula: t =

4. To determine if there is a significance _______ between colleges when grouped according to (colleges, year level, gender, type of students) ANOVA will be use: Formula: Total sum of Squares (TSS) TSS = Where in: X= Individual values in each column N= Total sample size
