B. Create. “Mandala Art”. Read and follow the instructions given. 15 points.
What is a mandala? A mandala is a complex abstract design that is usually circular in
form. In fact, the mandala is a Sanskrit word that means “circle”. Mandalas generally have one
identifiable center point, from which emanates an array of symbols, shapes, and forms.
Mandalas can obtain both geometric and organic forms. They can also contain
recognizable images that carry meaning for the person who is creating them.
Furthermore, a mandala is a symbol of the universe in its ideal form, and its creation
signifies the transformation of a universe of suffering into one of joy. It can also be used as an aid to
meditation, helping the meditator to envision how to achieve the perfect self.

Task: Draw and design your own mandala.

1. Measure the paper into a big square shape. Next, fold the paper into half diagonally in
each corner, half from top to bottom, and a half from left to right.
2. Draw a dot or small circle in the very center of the square. Then, using a ruler measure ½
(or more or less depending on your preferences) from the center dot. Make a mark (dot) ½
above, below, to the left, and to the right of the center dot.
3. Next, measure another distance, 1 and 1.5 inches from the center dot. Use the same
process stipulated in step 2. Make 4 rows.
4. Once you have drawn the dots, connect them using a ruler and compass if you like. Draw
a straight vertical and horizontal line connecting the dots.
5. In the next step, draw another series of dots diagonally (45-degree angle to the
perpendicular lines) at the same distance from the center dot. After, connect all the dots
you just made.
6. No you have drawn an outline of your mandala, begin drawing your own designs in each
row (you can draw different shapes, raindrops, loops, etc. depending on your preferences).
Drawing one shape at a time (each row) going around the whole circle. The important is to
repeat your pattern.
7. Lastly, apply colors.
