No, systems engineering is mostly about gathering requirements and concepts before any
design starts in engineering. It is a branch of engineering which defines what the problem is
and what is required in a solution. You just write requirements which define answers to the
questions about your system such as:

How the system should function?

What is the system used for?

What are the inputs and outputs of the system from a external view?

These are some of the things you specify in systems engineering. There could be lot of of

I used some R code in my masters program, and there was some VBA code written by a TA
that got passed around a bit. I currently write Java code on a regular basis. But...

The problem with the question, though, is that it assumes that Systems Engineering is a well
defined discipline with a bounded body of knowledge. We had a symposium class in which
various practicing Systems Engineers, many of them professors, came in and discussed what

So I guess the best answer to your question might me: "Maybe. Do you want that?", because
you can certainly find uses for code in many Systems Engineering projects, but you can
probably also avoid it if that's what you want.

Systems engineering can mean several different things. I have a Masters of Engineering in

programs at different schools can be very different.
Which career path is better for long term,
This is from the Commonwealth Graduate Engineering Program (Virginia) degree program a systems engineer or a software…

interdisciplinary problems."

I think that part is pretty standard across sys eng programs. However, UVA's program is very
mathematically-oriented (actually similar to Operations Research). Here is the next paragraph:

"The student is expected to gain an understanding of the theoretical and methodological

foundations for problem-solving and decision-making systems. This is accomplished through
a judicious selection of coursework that draws from disciplines such as mathematical systems
theory, decision theory, control theory, economics, operations research, management science,
computer science, artificial intelligence, cognitive science and human factors. In addition, each
student’s program is tailored to the particular needs and interests of the student through the
selection of elective courses and the completion of a supervised project."

More: Systems engineering

Most people I know that work professionally as "Systems Engineers" don't do a lot of
mathematics in their daily jobs.

Here is the description from INCOSE professional society:

Systems Engineering

"Systems Engineering is an engineering discipline whose responsibility is creating and

executing an interdisciplinary process to ensure that the customer and stakeholder's needs are
satisfied in a high quality, trustworthy, cost efficient and schedule compliant manner
throughout a system's entire life cycle."

Hope this is helpful!

Originally Answered: What exactly does a systems engineer do?
I am a system engineer working for a large marine engineering company. Before I describe
what I do from day to day it’s worth mentioning that the nature of the marine industry (or at
least the part I work in) demands that each ‘system’ delivered to a marine vessel is almost
entirely bespoke to that particular vessel. The system engineering I do is therefore significantly
different from, say, the work done by the system engineer on a Boeing 787, who essentially
designs his/her system for mass production.

Systems Engineering is a very difficult and challenging job. Not only that, you are responsible
for supervising yourself. And worse, you will work across nearly all company boundaries
(matrix management) which means when you have a yearly review, your personal supervisor
will have little idea what you’ve done all year. (So we record what we do daily in our Franklin

The simple answer is YES YES YES !!!

The more disciplines are involved, the more sophisticated systems become, the more a project
will require a systems engineer.

Imagine you have a music band. Starting of with a base and drums section. this is quite easy
to coordinate and control. Now add a string section, woodwind instruments, brass, percussion,
keyboards......not so easy any more.

A systems engineer is by far the most important member of a project team. He should at least
have:

1. A good understanding of project management and respect for requirements of the

project management than the project manager understanding systems engineering.

2. He have to have at least a working knowledge of all the engineering disciplines

Consider the usage of the Facebook app on your phone. As you are using the app, you are
utilizing:

1. Programs that control your touch panel. As you touch the screen, the device converts
the voltage change to a location on the screen. A program then identifies that this
location corresponds to the Facebook app on the screen and sends the touch to the
app.

2. Programs that display stuff on the screen. Facebook app tells a program what it

The quickest path to a Systems Engineering job is by accident. It's when you are doing
something unrelated and you are tapped to do Systems Engineering work. Talk about being
desperate.

The second quickest path is to learn a heck of a lot about Systems Engineering, then work in
jobs that aren't Systems Engineering (but close) like Desktop Support, Systems Administration,
and Network Administration.

Frankly, I wouldn't want to hire or work with a person who learned the least technology
