In Minecraft 1.8.x you need to specify a "Count:xx" for the number of items you want in a Slot.
If not you get null-value items. Do it from a command block like this: /setblock ~ ~1 ~
minecraft:chest 0 replace {Items:[{id:minecraft:apple,Count:12,Slot:0},
{id:minecraft:diamond_sword,Count:1,Slot:2,tag:{ench:[{id:16,lvl:5}]}}]}
