INTERVIEW FORMAT

Directions: I have included a sample of an interview. If you do not submit one on Monday, it can be
submitted on Wednesday.

INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH
Should include who you interviewed; how you connected with the person (location);why
this person was selected and approximate age. Ethnicity is optional.

NARRATIVE
Have at least ten questions before the start of the interview, but keep in mind that the interviewee may
include answers that are not part of your list of questions so go along with the person's answers.
Remember ask ONE question and wait on the response, and then ask the next question.

Thomas: “ How long have you been living here?

Interviewee(Marlon): I have been living in this area for about eight months, but before this I stayed
in shelters but that wasn't good!
Thomas: “Wow! But where is your family?”
Marlon: “I don't have one.”
Thomas: “So how come the shelters were not good?”
Marlon: “The people were so bad! If you went to the bathroom, you had to take all of your things with
you cause they would steal all your things! The workers just laughed if you complained and
then the guys would beat you up! They always had fights in them. I been in three shelters
and they all were bad! I'm safer on the streets!
Thomas:”What will you be doing in three years from now?”
Marlon: “ You mean if I'm not dead? LOL”
Thomas: “ Well we hope not that, but do you want a way out of this life-style? I mean you are not
that old yet,”
Marlon: “ Well my mom used to tell me that I was good in math but I got hooked up with the wrong
crowd when I was in school and we started skipping school to get high on stuff, so after
while, I just stopped going.
Thomas: “ How did you live?”
Marlon:” Things went down cause I couldn't fine decent work, and that caused a lot of fights, so I just
decided to go out on my own.”
Thomas:” How old were you during that time?”
Marlon:” I was seventeen back then, and I been on my own ever since.” It's been about twenty years.”
Thomas:”Have you tried to get help? There are services that could help if you wanted it.”
Marlon: “I tried that but I was too strung out to stay with it!”
Thomas: “ But it's never too late to give it another chance! I may have a contact that really may be
able to help IF you are ready for a change!
Marlon: “ Well, I don't know, but it is getting dangerous out here now. The other week, a guy
who was sleeping out here, somebody came up and stabbed him and killed him!” You
know, maybe, I don't know. Let me think about it.
Thomas:” I will be checking on you later this week, okay?”
Marlon: “Okay.”
