Principles of communication are defined as the guidelines that should be

followed to enable a communication process to accomplish its goals. These
principles are as follow:

 PREPARE AHEAD OF TIME

Preparation also involves thinking about the entirely of the communication
from start to finish. Research the information you may need to support your
message. Consider how you will respond to question and criticisms.

 KNOW YOUR TOPIC

The more you know about the subject and the more personal experience you
have, the greater your authority to speak and write about it.

 KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE

Knowing your audience involves understanding others, and their perspectives
to see if they understand your words.

 PRINCIPLE OF ATTENTION (LISTEN ATTENTIVELY)

No matter how well put together a sentence is, it won’t do us much good if we
are bad listeners. This is why focusing on ways you can improve your listening
skills is paramount to effective communication.

 DON’T BE MISLEADING
Likewise, its important to keep the contents and the tone of a message
uniform. It’s been shown that, when misaligned, we tend to give more
credence to the tone of a message than we do to its contest.

Here the nurse is seeking to understand specifically what the client means
and the use of clarification gives the client the chance to expand and
amplify their previous comment.

 REFLECTION
This may be used to communicate understanding to check accuracy and to
facilitate further explanation.

 PROBING
I may be employed at times to invite the client to expand on a particular
issue and clarify.

 SUMMARIZING
Summarizing helps the nurse and the client to draw the main issue of the
interaction together and allows for the clarification of mutual understanding.

 OPEN QUESTION
Open question can be considered one of the simplest and yet most
effective means of encouraging patients to disclose their concerns and to
communicate at a level comfortable for them. Open questions are useful in
