Definition of Human Rights

Human Rights are the principles in which all human beings should have access to,
regardless of their colour, creed or sexual orientation.

The Canadian Human Rights Act

An Act allowing equal opportunity among


individuals to “make for themselves the
lives that they are able and wish to have and
to have their needs accommodated,
consistent with their duties and obligations
as members of society, without being
hindered in or prevented from doing so by
discriminatory practices”.

The Ontario Human Rights Code

Prohibits actions that discriminate against people based on a protected


ground in a protected social area.

Bill 21

● In June 2019, Quebec passed Bill 21 which prohibits


public employees from wearing religious symbols at
work
● This bill specifically targets Muslim women and Sikh
men, not allowing them to take roles such as police
officer and teachers.

Discrimination due to Race

● With the COVID-19 pandemic, the rise in south-east


asian hate crime skyrocketed, specifically in 2021

● In 2021, there was a rise of 202 incidents of hate


crime,a rise of 300% from 2019

● Black Canadians also faced mass discrimination


throughout 2021.

International Human Rights Violations - Palestine

● With the conflict ongoing in Israel and occupied Palestine,


the Isreali government and military has committed several
human rights violations and war crimes
● These include killing and injuring many innocent civilians

International Human Rights Violations - Iran

● Iran, a muslim country, forces women to wear the hijab,


● Women who refuse to wear the hijab are subject to
abuse, imprisonment and sometimes death, as in the
case of Mahsa Amini
● This is a human rights violation

● Internationally, it is up to the countries to follow the declaration of
human rights, and the responsibility of ally countries to hold them
accountable
