Find out the noun!

How to make cities more livable for people? How to


create good, inclusive and accessible public spaces for
all?

1. I am not an urban planner or an architect. I am not a sociologist or an anthropologist.

2. Based on my personal experience, I can tell why public spaces are important in people’s
lives.

3. Just close your eyes for a second and think about your favorite public space.

4. What do you like to do over there most? Why do you think you love it there?

5. I like them because they provide green breather spaces in the city and provide a place for
recreation, enjoyment and a sense of belonging.
6. However, after hearing from many prominent urban development experts at a recent
World Bank-led “Urbanscapes Symposium”, I quickly realized that public spaces are
more than this.
7. It was striking to me to see and learn that, for others, public spaces are areas where
livelihoods are conducted and essential spaces for social interaction, especially for the
poor.
8. In that respect, providing people with new public spaces, where they can feel invited,
welcome and safe, can encourage them to spend more time outside and foster interaction
among lower income communities.
9. It should come as no surprise, then that planning standards recommend devoting 15-20 %
of land in cities to public open space.
10. Yet most cities are falling short of that goal: in the United States, for instance, 75% of the
100 largest cities do not meet that requirement.
11. So how can we work with cities to help them create a better urban environment and
leverage the potential of public spaces?
12. Although solutions should obviously be tailored to the specific context of each city, there
are six key priorities that emerged during the symposium:

Going to work in the morning

My job is a long distance from my home, almost 50 miles away. I have to wake up early
every morning, as I am always in a rush. There is never enough time for a relaxed breakfast.
At exactly 6:00 AM, I get into my car and start the long drive.

I usually like driving on the highway more than in the city. During the morning rush
hour, though, it is not very enjoyable. The heavy traffic is a little bit annoying. So I always
listen to my favorite classical music CD’s in the car – Chopin, Mozart, and Bach. That cheers
me up a lot.

The drive to work takes about one hour, going back home in the evening after work
takes even longer, maybe around 70 minutes. Lately I’ve been thinking about trying to take
the train to work instead of driving. That way, I could still listen to my music with headphones,
and even read a novel at the same time.

Rapid urbanization: opportunities and challenges to improve the well-being of societies.
1. Rapid urbanization has the potential to improve the well-being of societies.
2. Although only around half the world’s people live in cities, they generate more than 80
percent of Global Domestic Product (GDP).
3. Around the world cities are introducing initiatives aimed at addressing poverty,
improving infrastructure and tackling pollution.
4. For example, in a special contribution to the 2013 Human Development Report, former
New York Major, Michael Bloomberg talked about the ‘Opportunity NYC: Family

Which Country Should You Choose For Your Studies?

1. When you want to learn a new language, there is no better way than to immerse yourself
in that language's culture.

skills much more quickly than you would from casual use.
3. As with other languages, if you want to learn English, then your pronunciation and

5. Today we're discussing the different countries where you could consider studying English,
and the advantages of each.
6. An important issue to remember is that English varies considerably in pronunciation,

language”!
8. However, the good news is that English speakers of any background can generally

 USA/Canada:

1. The obvious choice for a location to learn English is Northern America.

2. In either Canada or the US, you will be surrounded by native speakers.

3. There are many structured programs in universities and at private institutions which teach
English as a foreign language, including intensive full-time programs.

4. This is helpful in securing a student visa, for which you must have a minimum of 18 hours
teaching per week to qualify.
5. Another advantage is that because America is so diverse, you can find the right
environment for you – would you prefer to be in a big city, or in a rural area? Somewhere
modern and progressive, or more traditional? Somewhere hot or somewhere cold? All of
these are available in America.

 UK:

1. If you study in the UK, you will learn classic British English.

2. In European schools and academia, British English is sometimes considered preferable to


use in a university environment.
3. Also, some non-native speakers find British English to be easier to understand than other
versions, as it is often spoken at a slower speed and with a clearer accent.
4. However, within Britain there are still a wide variety of regional accents.

5. Particularly in London, you will have to adapt to hearing a broad spectrum of accents,
but this can be excellent practice for speaking to others from around the world.

 Australia/New Zealand

1. If you are considering somewhere further afield, then Australia has a reputation for
excellent English teaching, and for being particularly good value for money when
compared to US or UK institutions.
2. Living costs are generally low, and quality of life is high, which makes for a comfortable
and pleasurable learning experience.
3. However, a disadvantage is the remoteness of Australia and New Zealand – they are a long
way from other countries, making travel to and from them difficult.
4. So if you choose to study here, it will likely be harder for you to take a trip home for a
visit.
