In earlier times, India lacked a uniform law pertaining to criminal procedures.

Instead, separate and

basic Acts governed the courts within and outside the Presidency-towns. Over time, the Acts in place

for the Presidency-towns were consolidated into the Criminal Procedure Supreme Court Act of 1852

and later replaced by the High Court Criminal Procedure Act of 1865. The Criminal Procedure Code

of 1861 absorbed the various Acts prevalent in the mofussils, which was later replaced by the Code

of 1871. The Criminal Procedure Code of 1882 introduced a uniform law of procedure for the entirety

of India, including the Presidency-towns and mofussils. The Code of 1882 was further supplemented

by the Code of 1898 and underwent multiple amendments, including significant ones in 1923 and

1955.
