Q- State TWO applications of Super computers:

A- Weather system  quantum mechanics, weather forecasting, climate research, oil

and gas exploration,  molecular modeling, nuclear scientist use it to resolve
complex calculations

Q- The management of a nationwide network of schools wants to setup a video

conference for discussing the academic and discipline issues in different
campuses.

a- Identify any THREE input devices that are required for this purpose.

A- 1-Webcam 2- Microphone 3- Mouse

b- Are floppy disks categorized as media or as devices? Give a reason to support your

answer.

A- Media is what holds the information, e.g. disk platen, CD, magnetic stripe.
Device is what uses the media and provides a physical interface. floppy disk are
categorized as media. It holds the data which is saved in it. Floppy disk drive is the
device which provide physical interface for floppy disk.

Q- What are the advantages of using magnetic disks? Give one application where disk is
better suited for use than tape.

A- Magnetic disks having large capacity and no limit of storage as we can attach as
many as we want. It is much cheaper and data is access randomly from magnetic
disks which saves a lot of time. Disk is better suited to store student information
than tape. The student information required all the time which can be from any
class or age. It can only be possible to have quick access to it if it could be
accessed randomly and the tape does not provide this facility
Q- Give the appropriate DOS command for the task given below?
1- Copy the entire content of a folder to another folder.
- Copy *.* c:\class9\abc
2- Copy only files that starts with ‘W’.
- Copy W*.*
3- List all of the files in the current directory?.
- Dir
4- Delete the entire directory named “TEST”.
- Deltree test
5- Display file and directory names only, without size, date, and time information.
- Dir/w

Q- Discuss the different type of computers depending on their hardware structure.

Analog computers use electronic or mechanical phenomena to model the
problem being solved by using on kind of physical quantity to represent another an
analog computer accepts data in continuous or physical form, represents it in a
suitable form to perform scientific operations. Analog data include distance, speed,
pressure, temperature, fluid’s flow, voltage, current etc. early special-purpose
analog computers were the slide rule, the cuvimeter and plainmeter, and the
harmonic analyzer, Analog computers do not require any storage capability
because they measure and compare quantities in a single operation. Output from an
analog computer is generally in the form of readings on a series of dial
(Speedometer of a car) or a graph on strip chart.
Digital computers process data in numerical form using digital circuits. The
digital computers perform arithmetic and logic operations with discrete values.
Digital computers are good at solving algebraic equations and even better at
manipulating numbers. The main component of digital computers is input devices,
output device, processing unit and a storage device. It comes in different sizes and
speeds and also the devices have variety of forms and capacity.
Hybrid computer combines best feature of analog and digital computers.
They are special-purpose computers, which are fast and accurate. Hybrid
computers help the user to handle both the analog and digital data. These machines
are generally used in scientific application and are monitoring industrial processes.
These computers have such hardware which can accept analog and digital data
both and process it according to the requirements. These are used in hospitals,
telemetry, spaceships etc.

Q- Disk Operating System (DOS) and Microsoft Windows are two prominent operating
systems. Describe any FOUR features of Microsoft Windows that are not available in DOS.

A- DOS or Disk Operating Systems are operating systems that were most
commonly found in PCs and were popular in past. Windows is a range of graphical
interface operating systems that are developed and sold by Microsoft.

Windows uses images, icons and text in their interface. The full text command
input in DOS required users to input commands and work on the computer using
text codes; making it harder to understand for first-time users or less tech savvy
people
DOS also offered less storage space compared to Windows. The highest storage
space that DOS offered came around 2 gigabyte, while the latest Windows offers
storage space in terabytes. Windows can also accommodate much larger hard
drives, while DOS cannot due to its dependence on FAT16 file system.

DOS used a text based interface that required text and codes to operate. Text is
used as the basic input system commands. While windows uses a mouse for all
operating system input. There are many other input devices used in Windows
unlike DOS.

Many new features offered by windows which are achieved by using multiple
software’s. Internet access, emailing, e-commerce is made possible using windows
operating system which was never possible in DOS. Software designing also much
simpler in windows based software which was quiet complicated in Dos based
softwares.
