COURSE DESCRIPTION: In this course students will be introduced to a variety of contemporary photographic imaging materials, methods, and techniques. In addition to continued work with their 35mm and digital SLRs, students will also be introduced to medium and large format cameras and films. Specific large format camera techniques and 4x5 film development will be covered. Various image processing techniques will be discussed, including: working with film for digital output, scanning negatives, digital capture (including working with RAW files), advanced digital imaging techniques for photography, digital file management, and digital printing. Students will complete a series of assignments designed to develop both their technical skills and aesthetic awareness culminating in a final portfolio of 12 16 matted prints. TEXT: Photography (10th Ed.) by London, Stone, and Upton Adobe Photoshop Classroom in a Book, (CS5) Other readings will be provided RECOMMENDED TEXT: Real World Photoshop CS 5 for Photographers Real World Camera Raw for CS 5 SUPPLIES: Digital SLR camera (DSLR) with lens(es) Handheld light meter OR a 35mm film SLR with light meter (or possibly your DSLR) Film: 4x5 Tri-X or HP 5 ISO 400 (some film will be provided lucky you!) Paper: 8x10 RC paper for contact sheets 11x14 Fiber based and/or RC paper as needed 4x5 film holders (optional two will be provided) 4x5 negative sleeves (4 per page) Changing bag Dust gun Typical Darkroom supplies (all the stuff you used in Photo I and II) EPSON Inkjet Paper (specific types to be discussed)

If you miss more than 5 classes, you will fail this class. If you come to class 30 minutes late, you will be counted absent. There are no excused absences. GRADING POLICY: Assignments must be turned in on time. Assignments will be evaluated in a group critique format and attendance for these critiques is mandatory. Late assignments will be marked down one letter grade for each class they are late. Submitting work without participating in critique will result in a one-letter grade drop. Not attending critique and not submitting work will result in a two-letter grade drop. If you have a conflict with a scheduled critique date it is your responsibility to make arrangements with me to present your work to the class at another time. If you miss a class it is your responsibility to contact me before the next class in order to pick up any assignments you may have missed. Showing up for class unprepared will be considered another absence. Since much of the discussion of work in this class is conducted in critique, class participation is mandatory and will be taken into consideration for grading.
