Ground
Because it increases the danger that others, particularly youngsters and pregnant women, will breathe
in cigarette smoke. Smoking in public spaces puts those with respiratory conditions in danger as well.
Data
According to recent studies, about 80% of people who breathe in secondhand smoke from smokers in
public have a larger risk of developing respiratory issues than smokers do.
Warrant
An action that harms innocent civilians should be prohibited for a variety of reasons. If smoking is
prohibited in public spaces, the risk of non-smokers developing lung and heart conditions is actually
reduced or eliminated.
Backing statement
Furthermore, by prohibiting smoking in public areas, we reduce the likelihood that smokers may
develop health issues themselves.
Rebuttal
Smoking itself is a cause of health issues, even though it may be argued that not everyone who smokes
in public places constantly endangers others. Saying that the number of impacted people is only a
relatively tiny portion is insufficient; whether many or few, one person put at risk is more than enough.
It stands to reason that smoking in public spaces should be prohibited.
