On February 8, 2022, we’ve had our discussion on Clinical Microscopy and Parasitology with our hospital,
Manila Central University. Our discussion started with discussing the laboratory safety practices such as
presenting yourself responsibly and professionally, appropriate clothing in the laboratory, good personal hygiene,
wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), segregating and disposing of wastes properly, avoiding eating food
in the laboratory, using of chemical fume hood, observe good housekeeping and reporting of damaged
equipment. As future registered medical technologists, it is a must for us to observe the following practices since it
will not only protect us but also the patient. For me, it is also important to be mindful of your actions at all times as
there may be scenarios wherein you will not be able to do the corrective actions.
After discussing the practices observed in the laboratory, we proceeded with discussing the quality
assessments and assurance. As per the discussion quality assessments refers to the processes performed that
help in guaranteeing the patient utmost care. In my opinion, performing the quality assessment is important since
our task as a medical technologists is to aid the physician in diagnosing the condition of the patient. If we were to
perform the necessary tests without utmost care, then, this may result in misdiagnosis and mistreatment of the
patient. On the other hand, quality assurance includes all the necessary phases in testing a patient sample, this
includes the pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases.
The next topic that was discussed was Clinical Microscopy. Under this topic, the following were discussed;
test performed as well as its purpose, basic concepts, specimen collection, rejection, handling and types of
specimen, and inclusion in routine urinalysis. In MCU, I have learned that the test performed under Clinical
Microscopy are the following; routine urinalysis and fecalysis, body fluid analysis, semenalysis, stool concentration
technique, pregnancy test, test for ketones, and fecal occult blood test. Additional to this, routine urinalysis is
considered to be one of the three major diagnostic screening tests performed in vitro after serum chemistry and
complete blood count. When it comes to specimen collection, as much as possible specimens in a clean, dry, and
leak-proof container are acceptable. For sample volume, the sample should be at least 20cc for adults and 6cc for
pediatrics. A specific volume is needed since we are also going to perform a chemical strip test wherein, we need
to soak the strip properly in the specimen. Another reason is that there may be cases wherein additional tests and
rechecking are needed. Hence, a certain volume is needed in submitting a urine specimen.
Routine urinalysis was also further discussed specifically the physical, chemical, and microscopical
examination. During this discussion, I was very happy since I am very familiar with the terms that are being
mentioned. This only means that I was able to understand what was included in our book which is authored by
Strasinger. To be honest, one of the books that I like the most to read is Urinalysis and Body Fluids, because the
explanations are easy to understand and direct to the point. Furthermore, I have learned that in Clinical
Microscopy and Parasitology section of MCU are using COMBUR10 Tests M Strips and U411 urine analyzer as
well as its principle.

Overall, the discussion was direct and easy to understand. I also appreciated that the hospital will provide
the PowerPoint since I will not need to make notes. I was hoping that we can be able to experience how to be an
intern in MCU but since there is a pandemic, there is no way that we can perform our internship in the hospital,
however, I am grateful because of the effort of our hospital in making sure that we can still be able to learn and
experience a good internship even it is online.
