1. What is jurisdiction?
Jurisdiction is the area over which someone has legal authority. The
area may be defined in terms of geographical boundaries or in terms
of certain kinds of subjects.
2. What is the nature of Indian federal system?
Indian federal system is an example of ‘holding together’ type of
federation
3. Give two examples of ‘coming together’ federation.
USA, Switzerland and Australia.
4. State any one feature that makes India a federal country.
The Constitution divides legislative powers between the Union
Government and the State Governments. It has three lists viz Union
list, State list and Concurrent list.
5. What are residuary subjects? Who can make law on these subjects?
a) The residuary subjects are those subjects that are not included in any
list.
b) The Union Government has the power to legislate on ‘residuary’
subjects.
6. What is decentralisation?
When power is taken away from the central and state government and
given to local government, it is called decentralisation.
7. What is federalism?
Federalism is a system of government under which power is divided
between a central authority and its various constituent units. The
various constituent units and the central authority run their
administration independently and do not interfere unnecessarily in
the affairs of one another.
8. What is Unitary Government?
Under the unitary system, either there is only one level of government
or the sub units are subordinate to the central government
9. What are Residuary Powers?
Matters which are not included in the division of powers, are known
as residuary powers. It was felt that there can be subjects which are
not mentioned in either of these lists. The central government has
been given the power to legislate on these ‘residuary’ subjects.
10. What are the two aspects of an ideal federal system?
Mutual trust, and
Agreement to live together.
