Theology of the Body: Deep realizations

By Kurt mendez

I have many realizations about the Theology of the Body that has caught my heart and
mind. These lessons truly makes my understanding deep and comprehensive on different matters.
In addition, I can comprehend different meanings in life and divine knowledge coming from
God. After acquiring some knowledge on the lessons of the Theology of the body, I learned the
deep meaning of love, marriage, family, faith, gift, sexuality, and divorce or annulment. This
pertains to how I can apply the lessons in real life.

For me, love is a word that we all have, ever since we are created in this world. Love is
incorporated into Gods' characteristics as no one can ever destroy it, but we can feel it inevitably.
I learned that we should be selfless when we are loving because that is the way of God. Although
most of us have a ton of sins, God still loves and accepts us because he is selfless, and we also
should. In addition, I learned to mirror Gods' love for others because love is the highest among
all virtues. After all, this is the foundation of all righteousness in the world. Understanding love
is equivalent to understanding Gods' love.

When love becomes too deep between a man and a woman, it will eventually lead to
marriage. I learned that this is not just a contract, ceremony, or label that a man and a woman
should refer to. Marriage is an eternal union between a man and a woman, where they will gain a
deeper understanding. In addition, they need to put aside their sexual needs as a partner. So, they
can learn to have deep love and respect. The word respect is something that they need to
remember because they’ll eventually see their partner’s true nature, such as their personality and
imperfections. In addition, it is not the happy ending of their life as a partner. Instead, I realize it
is a new challenge in life that the couple needs to endure and embrace until the end as one body
and spirituality. They will unite and will eventually form a fruitful family.
A fruitful family is similar to the Trinity because of its unified relationship with the
father, mother, son, daughter, and the holy spirit. I learned that family members should have the
freedom to choose what role they need to have. We are not bound to a specific task, instead, we
should freely act on our choice because God gave us the freedom to express what role we have in
our society and even in our family.

The next topic is faith in God. Faith is a word that allows us to believe in God. In my own
view, based on what I learned in the Theology of the Body, faith is a word that gives us hope
whenever we seek help from God. I also learned that faith is a way to see and talk to God
because that is the only way to believe in Him even though we cannot see Him. Having faith
means having a stronger will to continue living.

Continuing to live means continuing to accept the gift. I learned that this gift is already
within us and in our surroundings. In addition, I realize that our body and even the earth as our
home was a gift given by God. We should not always demand a specific gift from God or our
parents. Instead, we should be grateful for what we receive. I also learned that we need to use our
own gift in a proper and respectful way because this is the most precious thing we will receive in
our entire lives. We should always be thankful and not feel frustrated just because we did not get
what we wanted.

Sexuality is also a gift given by God. I already knew that there is a lot of sexuality in our
present time. There is still discrimination about others' sexuality. There are still diverging issues
and opinions that leads to violence or something else. I learned that the only thing to stop this
kind of situation that the LGBT community is experiencing is to make people realize that they
are part of everything. They deserve to be loved and accepted by society because they are also
humans with a heart. In addition, the LGBT community is not the only one who suffers. Most of
us are driven by gender roles in our families. We are forced to do that specific role, but I learned
we should respect it. What capabilities do we have as a man and a woman. We have the freedom
on what we prefer in our lives, and we should not let negative norms control us.
Negativity leads to divorce or annulment that will break the family. I learned that this
kind of act is the most crucial part that the spouses will ever experience because marriage is
indissoluble. There are a lot of processes in order to effectively separate the couple but this
should not happen in the first place. In contrast, I learned that this is the way to stop violence,
lack of commitment, and infidelity. So, it will not affect each other's life anymore.

Overall, Theology of the Body is a subject that allows us to gain deeper understanding on
different matters such as problems, faith in God, and seeking onto our true selves. To be honest,
while writing this reflection I got a feeling of calmness and lightness throughout my mind
because I never knew that this subject would make me even more mature in real life. The topic
love is the one that affects me the most in a good way. It helps to deeply understand my family
and friends because of the word self-giving love. I finally understand why I should continue to
care and love my surroundings because that is the right choice that I have. I cannot write the full
details of my own experiences but this helps me a lot to become a good person. Plus, I will never
forget some of the topics that I learned. I can only say that “Love will always be there within us,
no matter how difficult the circumstances are, when there is love, there is hope.”
