Panning

When panning a MONO signal in Logic the signal will be behaving much like
you expect it to, moving to the left speaker when panned left and to the right
in the same way. This is not the same for when we pan a STEREO signal. The
Pan pot is used in the same way and doesn’t appear any different whether
we are panning a STEREO or MONO signal, however the behaviour is
different. If you pan a stereo signal to the left it will turn down the signal
coming from the right, it won’t actually move it in the mix like a MONO
signal would.

As you can see in the

meter the singal i s
almost central and
both levels are almost
the same (wi th no
panning engaged).

Here you can see the

pan pot has been
adjusted to the left
and the signal on the
right has been
reduced.

It is important to understand why this

works because panning -27 in MONO
will appear differently in a mix to
panning -27 with a STEREO signal.
The best advice that can be giving
when panning is to not look at the
screen and close your eyes when
mixing, try to visualise the ensemble
playing in front of you. It is also
important that you never automate panning with real instruments, it will
immediately give the illusion that the music isn’t real.
