10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU

I hate the way you talk to me

And the way you cut your hair

And I hate the way you drive my car

I hate it when you stare

I hate your big dumb combat boots

And the way you read my mind

I hate you so much it makes me sick

It even makes me rhyme

I hate the way you’re always right

And I hate it when you lie

I hate it when you make me laugh

Even worse when you make me cry

I hate it when you’re not around

And the fact you didn’t call

But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you

Not even close, not even a little bit

Not even at all

The film

The film “10 things I hate about you” takes place in a modern high school in
the U.S. Its plot is based on Shakespeare’s play : there are two sisters
whose father is a very strict man. He has a rule : the youngest sister will
be able to date when her older sister does first. The problem is that her
sister is a ferocious girl. She hates the idea of having boyfriends and she
prefers to study and read. Only a very brave man could tame this “shrew”…
Everything happens in everyday teenager environment, which includes
friends pressure, tough teachers, school popularity and other issues.

While watching the film, we can realize that a lot of characters’ names
come from the original Shakespeare’s play. The oldest sister’s name is Kat,
which is a reference to Katherina, the main character of “The taming of
the shrew”. Her surname is Stratford, which is also a reference do
Stratford-uopn-Avon, the city where Shakespeare himself was born.
Patrick’s surname, Verona, is the name of Petruchio’s hometown. Patrick is
the brave guy that faces Kat’s toughness, and his name reminds the name
of Shakespeare’s original, Petruchio. The name of the school is “Padua”, the
city where the original play takes place.
