When Agamemnon comes home he is slain by Aegisthus (in the oldest versions of the story) or by
Clytemnestra. According to the accounts given by Pindar and the tragedians, Agamemnon is slain in a
bath by his wife alone, after being ensnared by a blanket or a net thrown over him to prevent resistance.

The Furies chorus in 'Eumenides', 'The Oresteia', (1981) - YouTube

“Their relationship to the Erinyes’ function as goddesses of vengeance and curse and objects of Athenian cult”

- The Erinyes in Aeschylus’ Oresteia (vuw.ac.nz)

Erinyes are known as furies or Eumenides; they are goddesses of punishing the wrongdoing and
blood guilt. They would appear over when someone when they would carry out crime against a
member of their family. They were also invoked if a non-family member was killed.

They were born from the blood of Uranus. They were thought to have spent time in the
underworld along with hades and Persephone. The underworld is ruled by hades, it is said to be
below the earth where souls of the dead go after they become deceased. The underworld is
said to be invisible to people of the living. There are three Erinyes: Tisiphone, Alecto and
Megaera.

They were feared all over the ancient world and once they caught an eye of an awful crime,
they were very hard to get rid of. In a famous myth, the Erinyes perused Orestes after he
murdered his own mother. He was tormented endlessly until he was purified by Apollo and
Athena.
