His Name and It’s Story

Was born with the name Suga Michio. Was permitted to adapt the Nakasuga Michio at the age of 11.
Through marriage he adopted his wife’s name, Miyagi.

His Life
 He a Japanese musician, famous for his koto playing. He suffered an eye disease 7 months after
his birth.
 His mother left when he was 4 and was raised by his grandmother, Mine.

 He was totally blind at the age 8 and started apprenticeship in koto, the instrument, through
Nakagima Kengyo at Ikuta School. Gained the title master when he was 11 years old.
 Composed his first work “Mizu no Hentai” at 14 years old.His career allowed him to to move to
Keijo (Seoul, Korea) and at age 22 years old he achieved the rank Dai-Kengyo (top rank in koto),
but was still unsatisfied as he moved to Tokyo with lofty ambition. At age 25 he made a debut as
a composer at Chou Kaido in Tokyo.
 He invented new instruments namely:
o 17-string bass koto / Jushichigen
o 80-string koto
o Tan-goto / short koto
o Dai-kokyu (fiddle)

 His work triggered the development


of contemporary music for
traditional Japanese instruments. He became a professor at Tokyo
School of Music (Tokyo University of the Arts).
 Miyagi was headed for Osaka to perform his work “Variations on Etenraku” when, in the early
morning on June 25, 1956, he fell from the express train “Ginga” near Kariya Station on the
Tokaido Line. He died at 7:15 that morning at Toyoda Hospital in Kariya. He was 62 years old.
