    Multi-stage cementing is employed in cementing long
    casing strings in order to: (a) reduce the total pumping
    pressure; (b) reduce the total hydrostatic pressure on
    weak formations, thereby preventing their fracture; (c)
    allow of selective cementing of formations; (d) allow
    the entire length of casing to be cemented; and (e)
    ensure effective cementation around the shoe of the
    previous casing string.
