1202 systoms are the proferod choice as an extinguishant fora multitude of erica facies. Fast,

C02 Systems - Total Flooding
‘Some commonly asked questions...
> How fast do wo flood the room?
‘To meet regulations, the design concentration of CO2 on surface fres must be achieved
within 1 minute for surface fos ;
{or deep seated fres, the design concentration needs to be achieved within Tminutes,
however, a 30% concentration should be achieved ater 2 minutos.
> What about maintain
‘The minimum amount of agent must stil be
maintain design concentration you will need to

‘This is particularly important when the protected area contain machines such 2s Turbines
or Generators.ire Protection

‘There are two methods of Calculating the quantity of CO2 =
4. The Surface Method
2. The Volume method
‘The quantity of CO2 requted is based on the total discharge rate from carefully positioned
‘nozzies. The time taken for discharge is set at 30 seconds for calculation purposes unless.
‘otherwise specified, Area tobe protected which are hot or exist in high tomperature
‘environment, of which take a long Ume to cool or shut down, wil require longer discharge
time. Fuel with auto ignition tomperature below thelr boiling points wal requir a minimum
4 Sminutes decharge time.

CO2 Discharge Pipework & Nozzles
Discharae Pipework
> The discharge plework has a crucial effect on how a CO2 System performs. The pressure
losses due tolength and diameter of pipe, numberr of ftings,.ete must be calculated.
> The numberof Nozzles and the correct ering ofthe orifice is dependent onthe proper
sizing and length of the discharge pipework
> This is normally calculated using a software program due to the complexity ofthe
calculations.
Nozzles
> The nozzle selection I an important art ofspecitying a CO2 System. From the Hydraulics
Program Calculation, the nozzio flows and aroas wil be determined. The Nozzle area
reeds tobe changed to give the correct dlameter of the outlet holes.

Automatic Fire Detectors
‘The prime function of Fire Detectors are to detect one or more
the protected environment indicative of the development of a Fire Coni
Usually mounted on ceiling or air ducts detectors are activated by smoke or
radiation. These conditions can be readily identified with important stages
in the development of a fire :~
* After ignition has occurred, the invisible products are being released.
When visible smoke is being produced.
= When the fire is producing flame and a degree of illumination.
® When temperature in the vicinity of the fire rises rapidly or reaches a
predetermined figure.‘ive Protection

Flame Detectors
"Flame Detector responds to the appearance of radiant
‘energy visible or outside the range of the human eye, ie.
Infra-Red (IR) or Ultra Violet (UV) radiation.
"Flame Detectors have a quick response capability and
they are not dependent on combustion products or heat
to actually reached the detector head.
= Early warning will obviously only be achieved if th
hazard or materials being protected are readily flammable.
Ina smoky fire, IR detectors are proferred as IR radiation
‘can penetrate smoke better.
= Flame detectors are not suitable to be used where the
) hazard or materials are likely to produce smoulder and,
‘smoke for a long period before flame appears.
