COURSE DESCRIPTION
The United States is becoming increasingly diverse and the world increasingly globalized. The
central focus of the course is on the links between diversity and psychological processes at
individual, interpersonal, and international levels. We consider several basic questions, including:

• What is diversity?
• How do race, nationality, and religion influence individuals?
• What impact does diversity have on cross-group relationships?
• How is diversity related to people’s perceptions of fairness, justice, and mental health?
• What is the relevance of people’s perceptions of fairness, justice, and mental health to

social problems and social change?
• Does respect for diversity promote peace and positive change?
Much research addresses these questions, and we will closely examine the evidence that has
emerged so far.

OVERVIEW
PREREQUISITE:
Introductory psychology course recommended, but not required.

COURSE FORMAT:
This course meets in a virtual classroom using the ZOOM web- conferencing software. Please see
the Harvard Summer School website for system and equipment requirements: guidelines for web-
conference courses.

Having the proper equipment and system compatibility is required for participation in this
course.

TEACHING METHOD:

Course taught via lectures, videos, discussions, and small group activities via the Zoom web-
conferencing software.

LIMITED ENROLLMENT:
To facilitate meaningful discussions, total enrollment is capped at 45 students per semester.

REQUIREMENTS:

Attendance, preparation, original work, adherence to deadlines, and participation in class discussions
are requirements of this online seminar. The class is designed as a weekly participatory seminar.
Therefore, there are grade penalties for absences or lateness, and/or unresolved technological
difficulties that prevent participation and which are the student’s responsibility. Students are
expected to have the required equipment and to seek tech support when needed.

Students are expected to understand and adhere to the Harvard Summer Schools policies on

ASSIGNMENTS SUMMARY:
In preparation for class discussions, you will write a total of four one-page, double-spaced re-
sponse papers to the readings and assigned videos or prompts. You will also be assigned an article
to summarize and give a 5 minute individual presentation on the key ideas.

and printed out via Harvard library’s on-line Hollis system or the course website. (Students are
responsible for procuring documents.)

EVALUATION METHOD
For Undergraduate Credit: Response papers, midterm project/paper, final examination project/
paper, online presentations, class participation, and participation in group activities. Please note
undergraduate students will be expected to submit 5-page papers using a minimum of 5 peer-
reviewed sources for the midterm and final.

For Graduate Credit: All of the requirements for undergraduate credit plus 3 additional reviews of
articles for the midterm project/paper and final project/paper. Please note graduate students will
be expected to submit 8-page papers for the midterm and final.

Students are required to follow APA 7th edition formatting for ALL assignments. Type your
manuscript in Times New Roman. Use 12 points for the type size. Use 1-inch margins at top,
bottom, left and right of the page. More details will be given on the specific structure of the paper.

(1) Midterm Paper:
• Undergraduate students = 5-page double-spaced paper that uses a minimum of 5 peer-

(2) Final Project/Paper:
• Undergraduate students = 5-page double-spaced paper that uses a minimum of 5 peer-

The final examination project/paper will be based on a question/topic that addresses a

(3) Response Papers:


• You will submit 4 brief response papers. These are graded on a pass/fail basis.
• Response papers should be comprised of a Title Page (see page 1 of the sample APA 7
student paper); a one-page response to the prompt (see page 2 of sample APA paper);
and a Reference Page (if using direct quotes; see page 17 of the sample APA paper).

You should:
• Address the prompts thoroughly by making explicit connections to the readings, lectures,
videos, discussions, and group activities.
• Cite published articles using APA 7th edition formatting.
• DO NOT copy and paste the question you are answering. Instead, incorporate a strong
topic sentence that signals which question(s) you are answering
• DO NOT plagiarize (see Harvard Guide to Using Sources and Tips to Avoid Plagiarism)
• Complete: Using Sources, Five Scenarios and Using Sources, Five Examples
• Make an appointment with the Writing Center
• Formatting Guidelines
• You should...

(4) Individual Presentation:
You will be asked to give an individual presentation and to submit 2 electronic copies of
your presentation slides; one via email and one on the Canvas course site. The presentation
should last approximately 5 minutes.

You will have the opportunity to sign up for a time slot for your 5-minute individual PowerPoint
presentation and thereafter choose from a list of journal articles and book chapters. You
will turn in an electronic copy of your PowerPoint (or other format like Prezi or Emaze,
etc…) presentation via e-mail and the Canvas course site. You should present a review of

your chosen article, articulate the main idea of the argument/findings, and then discuss
its internal consistency, psychological appeal, ability to account for data and incite new
research, and its connection to the questions and themes of the course. Your presentation
should reflect key themes in the article for that week and be designed to prompt discussion.

(5) Participation:

This is a discussion-focused course. There is no substitute for the dialogue that takes place
during a group discussion online. You will be asked to participate in group discussions and/
or activities.

Good quality contributions to discussions are defined as thoughtful, appropriate, frequent,


and considerate input. Note that this course is an academic arena for exploration; you should
feel comfortable to express opinions within the boundaries of basic respect and relevance.

Students will not be allowed to turn in late assignments or make-up assignments. If


students do not submit their response papers, presentations, midterm paper, or final
paper on the required date will receive a zero for that assignment. Students may not
substitute other work for the response papers, presentations, midterm examination
paper, or final examination projects or any other required assignments.

GRADING POLICY AND ASSIGNMENTS
Final grades will be deducted points for lateness, leaving class early, camera turned off, and
absences (unless there is a serious documented illness or emergency). The issues will affect your
participation grade.

Baumeister and colleagues (1995, 2007) claim that the need to belong is a powerful
motivational basis for interpersonal behavior, and it is thwarted by social exclusion and
rejection. In support of their hypothesis they list nine criteria and pay close attention to the
range of implications of the belongingness hypothesis. However, the authors state that
falsification is also a relevant approach to evaluating a broad hypothesis. The belongingness
hypothesis could be falsified if it were shown, for instance, that many people could live happy
R
healthy lives in social isolation or that many people show no cognitive or emotional responses
to significant changes in their belongingness status. Provide alternative interpretations of
the evidence (the empirical findings) to refute the argument that the need to belong is a
fundamental motivation. [You can choose either one or two alternative interpretations and
elaborate on them or give brief summaries of three or four alternative interpretations. The aim

of this response paper is to help sharpen the ability to detect rival explanations.]

2. Briefly review the support for the need to belong argument and explain whether
you agree with the claim that the need to belong is a fundamental motivation. Relate your
personal experiences to the belongingness theory and social media. Did Mark Zuckerberg,
