The Lorax

The story is set in the town of Thneedville, where the air is polluted, and

nature is non-existent. The town's inhabitants rely entirely on a large corporation

called O’Hare, Inc., which sells them artificial trees that are made of plastic and are

meant to satisfy their desire for nature. The protagonist of the movie, Ted, is a young

boy who becomes interested in learning about the natural world and sets out to find

a real tree for the girl he likes. Ted's journey takes him outside the town, where he

meets the Once-ler, a reclusive businessman who tells him the story of how he

destroyed the natural environment and the ecosystem to build his business empire.

The Once-ler's story shows how he started with a small business idea to harvest the

tufts of Truffula trees to knit "thneeds" - a multi-functional object - that were loved by

everyone. But as his business grew, he became more and more focused on profit,

disregarding the consequences of his actions. He continued cutting down trees,

polluting the air and water, and ignoring the warning of the Lorax - a creature that

speaks for the trees and tries to protect them. As a result of his actions, the Truffula

trees are destroyed, and the ecosystem collapses, leading to the departure of the

Lorax and the disappearance of all the other animals that depended on the trees.

The Once-ler, who was once successful and wealthy, is left alone in a wasteland.

The Lorax, therefore, shows the dangers of unchecked corporate greed and the

need for businesses to take responsibility for their actions. The Once-ler's pursuit of

profit led to the destruction of the environment, which, in turn, affected his business

and the livelihoods of all the other creatures in the ecosystem. His failure to consider
the long-term consequences of his actions resulted in the demise of his business

and the loss of everything he had worked so hard to build.

IKEA

IKEA is a multinational company that designs and sells ready-to-assemble

furniture, home accessories, and kitchen appliances. The company was founded in

1943 by Ingvar Kamprad in Sweden and is now headquartered in the Netherlands.

IKEA is known for its modern and functional designs, affordable prices, and

the use of sustainable materials. The company operates more than 400 stores in 52

countries and employs over 200,000 people worldwide. The company is known for

its affordable and stylish furniture that has made home decor accessible to millions

of people around the world. The company's products are made using raw materials

sourced from around the world, including wood, cotton, and other textiles.

Similarities

In "The Lorax,"The Once-ler's actions lead to the destruction of the Truffula

Trees, the pollution of the air and water, and the displacement of the native wildlife,

including the beloved Lorax. The Lorax, who is a mystical creature that speaks for

the trees and the environment, tries to stop the Once-ler from his destructive path

but fails. The Once-ler's greed ultimately leads to the demise of the entire

ecosystem.

Similarly, Ikea has been criticized for its business practices that have led to

environmental degradation. Ikea's production process involves significant energy

consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste generation, which have

contributed to environmental pollution and climate change. The production of Ikea's

furniture is responsible for a significant portion of the company's carbon footprint.

The furniture is typically made from wood, which requires a significant amount of

energy to harvest, transport, and process. The production process also generates a

lot of waste, including sawdust and other by-products that are often discarded. The

use of fossil fuels, such as oil and gas, to power production facilities and transport

products also contributes to the company's carbon emissions.

Conclusion

The Lorax is essential to the business world, as companies have a

responsibility to consider the impact of their actions on the environment and the

wider community. This movie is also a call to action for businesses to adopt

sustainable practices, reduce their carbon footprint, and invest in renewable energy.

Companies need to focus on minimizing their impact on the environment while also

creating value for all their stakeholders. The movie shows that businesses that

prioritize sustainability and social responsibility can be successful in the long run,

even if it means making short-term sacrifices.

In conclusion, "The Lorax" and Ikea are two examples of how corporate greed

can lead to environmental degradation and the loss of biodiversity. However, Ikea

has taken steps to mitigate its impact on the environment. The company has set

ambitious sustainability goals, such as becoming climate positive by 2030, sourcing

only renewable and recycled materials, and promoting circular business models.

Ikea has also invested in renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power,

to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.

The purpose of the movie "The Lorax" is to raise awareness about

environmental issues, specifically deforestation and the destruction of natural

habitats. The movie aims to teach viewers about the importance of preserving
natural habitats and the consequences of not doing so. It encourages people to take

action and make changes in their own lives to reduce their impact on the

environment. The Lorax has become a symbol for environmental activism and

sustainability, inspiring people to become more aware of their impact on the planet

and to work towards a more sustainable future.
