Crate training

Walk puppy in neighbourhoods where dogs are vaccinated

Positive-based training. Control environment so that puppy does not have chance to
practice unwanted behaviour (chew shoes, climb chairs, raid trash)

Avoid food bowls

Potty training
• When in the house: either 1) in her crate, 2) in puppy-safe and potty-
safe playpen, 3) attached by leash, 4) under direct supervision
• Every 2 hours for 2-month puppy
• If she doesn’t potty, then put back in crate for 15-30 minutes before
taking her out again
• Take her out 10–20 min after drink of water

Potty body language:

• Start sniffing ground, circle, wander away

Add cute to go potty

• When you can reliably predict when she’s about to potty, add cue word
“go potty”, clearly and encouraging, just once, right before you think she will
squat

Crate
• Size big enough for puppy to lie down and turn, but not big enough to
have separate potty area
• Avoid letting puppies out of crates when they are barking or whining,
wait until they are quiet to let them out
• Reward puppy for quiet by tossing treat when she’s quiet or opening
door and giving attention when quiet
