MUS 167 Fundamentals of Music 1

Project

Find a tune which has a pure modal/tonal melody. It should be other than C
major, C minor or A minor. It can be a pre-existent tune as well as an original
one composed by yourself. Adapt it as a “Cantus Firmus” (not consisting of fixed
note durations, but showing rhythmic variety as much as possible under the
vocabulary of 16th century) and write a Counterline against it. The result should
be a florid:florid (“free”) counterpoint.

You should write a vocal music consisting of 16 bars, in 4/2 meter.

You can locate the Cantus Firmus in any part (upper or lower).

Use dynamics and articulation marks.

Use at least
1 pair of eight notes,
1 musica ficta,
1 suspension into the leading tone and
1 rest with imitation anywhere in the middle of the counterpoint.

Analyze the intervals. Find out all non-essential tones (dissonance), circle and
label them.

While applying the counterpoint rules, please remember that the most important
thing you should consider is music.

If you do any contrapuntal mistakes on purpose, please identify and describe

them. These mistakes shouldn’t be more than 3.

Handwriting or notation program: both is possible. But in any case, mind the
notation rules. A legible and tidy organization of your score is very important.

2 files starting with your name-surname should be submitted to the “Project”

folder in Weekly Content:
1) Score (PDF)
2) MIDI or live recording (MP3)

Due Date: January 16, Monday, 09.00 am

(Late submissions won’t be accepted)
