Omonose the Ochibe, a play written by Hope Eghusa is a truer story of an event that traumatized the

youths of the Okpara community in Edo. The story revolves around a young Urhobo man who is
industrious and hardworking but impotent. His impotency caused the elders to decide to take his newly
wedded wife and give her to the laziest man in the family. The decision of the elders is not only an
abomination but a great disrespect and disregard to Omonose while he is yet alive. The embarrassment
was so huge for Omonose that he started a massacre in the village starting from those who agreed to
the decision.He is later arrested for his misdeed but not without them regretting their actions towards
the youth who they could have treated his ailment rather than disgracing him in public . One of the
elders rightly proclaimed:

Okoro:........to transfer a wife married by one man to another in the family when the man is
alive is wrong and could be dangerous...

The play opens with the narrator bearing a story of Omonose. It starts with the woman leader praying
for the young couple. There was the ritual prayer from the family over the bride and bridegroom for as
many children as they could bear. May their children be a blessing to the family. The young woman was
being married into the family. The events of marriage ceremonies were usually concluded with a night of
conviviality. The night of the marriage was special as it was the night that the bridegroom was to begin
his physical relationships with his young wife. Nosy old women wanted to know whether she was a
virgin or whether she came into their family already experienced in sexual encounters.
