An Unexpected Turn of Events

While nishing up the initial tranliteration of the monument and art book words into Romaji,
and then into Kana, we discovered something. e other prevalent symbols, features on the
official website, the artbook, and other promotional material, contained similarities to another
Hylian alphabet. ese similarites allowed us to translate parts of the text. As of writing, this
work is ongoing.
Twilight & Era of Prosperity Hylian Map
e following is a work in progress. It shows a map between Twilight Era Hy-
lian and the suspected Era of Prosperity Hylian. e GameCube orientation of
Twilight Era Hylian is used here, but there have been instances where con dent
character matches are ipped, reversed, and rotated.

Works in multiple places, but because the style is different enough and due to lacking volume of text
sources, this cannot be con rmed with 100% con dence

Ancient Hylian
Ancient Hylian, mostly based on the latin alphabet, is polyalphabetic in nature in that several le ers function as part of
a sound pair with another le er. Notably, Breath of the Wild (and A Link Between Worlds, Triforce Heroes) have 21
unique characters, which is similar to the complete Hepburn Romaji alphabet (which is inclusive of Gojuon and Da-
kuten).

This variant of Hylian also appears in A Link Between Worlds and Triforce Heroes. In A Link Between Worlds, the individual charac-
ters are flipped.
Hylian (Kana Based)
e rst appearance of kana based Hylian was with Ocarina of Time. It features gojuon only without Dakuten. It appears
that this variant of Hylian is potentially an ancestor of the kana based Hylian from the Force Era.

Sheikah
Shiekah, rst canonically appearing in Breath of the Wild, is based on a latin alphabet, and it features punctuation and
numerals. Sheikah can be found on many things, but perhaps most notably, on the inside of the Sheikah Shrines and
Towers.

Gerudo
Gerudo, like Sheikah, is based on a latin alphabet and provides basic punctuation. e known Gerudo number systems
support only one and ve, which makes it very similar to early Roman number systems. Gerudo has a distinct place as a
language in the overall series, as one of the few alphabets to undergo no real change since it’s rst appearance, in Ocarina
of Time. Since then, it has only appeared in Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild.
