CULTURAL INSIGHT

DANISHCLASS101.COM CULTURE CLASS: ESSENTIAL DANISH VOCABULARY S1 #1 - NATIONAL HOLIDAYS 3

1. Christ mas

Christmas is one of the most important holidays in Denmark. It is a time when family
and friends gather together. Danes also have a great number of Christmas lunches,
where you eat traditional food and drinks while saying Goodbye to the passing
year.

2. East er

Easter follows Christmas in the list of important holidays. It's also one of the longest
vacations of the year, a good reason to meet with family and friends, eat lunch,
and enjoy some drinks. Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost all have their own
designated beer.

3. Pent ecost

Pentecost is the shortest of the three main Danish holidays. As with Christmas and
Easter, people usually celebrate by meeting for lunch, drinking, and generally
having fun. Pentecost is also a time for coming-of-age celebrations, and many cities
celebrate the days with a parade and a carnival.

4. St . Johns Eve

The 24th of June is Saint John's Eve. Danes celebrate this day with good food and
plenty of alcohol. At the end of the day, people will listen to speeches before
lighting the huge bonfire that has been built on each town's public grounds.

5. Carnival

Carnival is bound by many traditions, but the main point is to dress up as heroes
and princesses. Children look forward to participating in "rattling," which are
festivities in local communities where kids can take a swing at a barrel filled with
candy. It's kind of like a piñata!
