The Rules
In order to fully understand Teaching Your Guitar To Wall, it is necessary to identify some
theoretical rules used in the first part of this book.
RULE 1: The root of a chord must be played on beat J (the down beat of the measure)
whenever a chord change occurs.
RULE 2: The upper part of the chord must be played on the “and” of the beat (the up
beats of the measure).
*The majority of this book uses rule two, but not exclusively. There will be
measures where the upper chord is played on the down beat.
The following example shows one measure of Dm7 and one measure of Gm7. The root notes
of each chord (D and G) are played on beat number one. The upper part of each chord is played
on the and of one.
