Beware of Subtle (or Not) Problems ‘Aused CMM is a rather unique commodity in the industrial world. They're a piece of manufacturing technology that if well cared for, can theoretically last forever. CMMs aren't in the messy business of cutting chips or using consumables like cutting fluid, so they don’t rattle themselves apart or get full of grime during their working lives. There are many tell- tale signs that set apart a good used CMM from a bad one. Understanding what to look for could mean the difference between a good purchase, or a $100,000 mistake. A good example of this can be found on the actual auction listing on the right. Examples of subtle problems: - Automatic (DCC) machine has been crashed, causing slight to major misalignment of the axes, = Contamination in air lines causes deterioration of hoses and clogs air bearings. = Machine has been dropped. Deterioration of electronics due to machine’s age or usage conditions. = Contamination on bearing ways causes wear or scoring to surfaces. - Probe is nearing the end of its useful life It’s usually impossible to tell any of these things from a picture on an auction site, and sometimes it’s even difficult to tell in person if you don't know what you're looking for. Were you aware that most CMMs have special shipping brackets, packing and handling requirements to ensure they don't get damaged in transit? What is the Likelihood that you're going to get the shipping brackets when you pick up your new used CMM? What is the likelihood that any given trucking company or riggers you hire will know how to prevent transit damage to that particular unit? What Else Might Be Missing? Other items that can be missing from a used CMM purchase include software user's, manuals, portlocks (hardware keys), and original program CD's. The most significant “missing” item with buying used is out-of-date software. Some used CMM purchasers discover after the fact that the software they have purchased with the machine is so out-of-date that it's not supported, upgradeable or license transferrable.
