Lesson Plan 5– Protect the Ocean!

Lesson Objective:
Students will be able to identify 3 ways that we can protect our oceans from pollution.

Procedures:
 Introduce students to pollution by displaying a picture of trash on a beach.
 Teacher will ask questions to promote critical thinking such as what do you see? How do
you think the trash got there? Will it affect the animals in the ocean? How?
****Record answers on an anchor chart for reference***
 Next, students will watch a short film called A Whale’s Tale from YouTube
 Students will then discuss the film and discuss ways that the boy helped the animals.
 Students will brainstorm and record ways that they can help reduce waste and prevent
waste from making its way to the oceans
 Read the article from Kids National Geographic on How Can We Protect the Ocean?
 Students will revisit their brainstorming charts and compare them to the article
 Next, students will create a recycled art project by creating sea creatures out of
recyclable materials
