Introduction
Vegetable production plays an important role in human diet in arapai community soroti and
soroti district at large. Vegetables in agriculture are important undertaking because unlike other
agriculture commodities, it has been realized that it can be practiced profitably at both large and
small scale. Over and above its potential for being a profitable commodity, olericulture
production plays an important role in socio-economic development as it alleviates the current
unemployment status by creating jobs to the surrounding communities near arapai sub-county
especially to many people who can hardly find a job after their studies .The critical changes in
the global economy as while as the changes in Uganda as a whole has resulted in great number
food insecurity and unemployment. .
They are content with miserably low wages because of fear of vegetable farming business. As a
consequence, People are becoming the poorest part of the population especially in arapai
community. Vegetables are used in raw form as salad or cooked food according to the taste,
which provide a balanced diet and keep human being healthy.

Statement of the problem

Arapai community is mostly effected by lack of proper supply of vegetable such as sukuma wiki
reach in vitamin A since majority of the local community only depends on dried potatoes and
eggplants. The project will also emphasize on initiating the local community members near
arapai centre i.e. apider, temele and aloyet to start such a olericultural farming to improve on the
living standards of their families through incomes got out of sale of sukuma wiki.

The growing of vegetable (sukuma wiki) creates well balanced choices for employment-
intensive investments women and youth in agriculture activities which can create immediate
short term employment opportunities which can be more easily tapped by young people.
Combined with appropriate local economic development strategies, it can generate more and
sustainable jobs. This requires strategies to make agriculture more significant to our day to day
life.

The vision
To raise income through vegetable growing, which will directly benefit the local community
farmers through buying and selling process and hence improving on nutritional status through
the consumption?

The mission

To create more opportunities to enable local farmers to adopt and supply the production of
vegetables for commercial purposes to raise their real income and be able to purchase different
food staffs.

The General objective

To establish accessibility of sukuma wiki production in the near by centre’s such as apida and
aloyet to enable people access the vitamin A to improve on there nutrition.
Specific objectives
- To Increase the production of vegetables especially sukuma wiki so as to attain high
production level
- To strengthen the productive capacity of vegetables towards women and young farmers.
- To create a sense of awareness for the women folk towards sustainable agriculture
production.
- To strengthen the farmers and create a need on vegetable production.

Project beneficiaries
The project is at arapai community (sub-county) ,the main beneficiary are business women’s and
men who will involve themselves in the buying and selling of sukuma wiki vegetable through the
profits got out off the sale and all buyers at arapai commodity

Evaluation plan
The evaluation will focus on the objectives, goals and the expected output from the sukuma wiki
vegetable growing project.
The project will allow various farmers who are interested in sukuma wiki project to either joint
or support the project and learning of techniques used in the project toward output production.

Indicative costs
The project will incur cost in nursery bed management, sprayings, land preparation, transporting
to the customers (market) centre’s.

Conclusion
