Statement оп the Use of American Welding Society Standards

AII staпdards (codes, specificatioпs, recoпunended practices, methods, classificatioпs, and guides) of the Аmегiсап
Welding Society (AWS) are voluпtary coпsenslls standiu-ds that. have been developed in accordance with the шles of the
A111erican National Standai·ds Institllte (ANSI). When АWS American Natioпal Staпdards are either incorporated in, 01·
made part of, documents that are inc]uded iл federal or state laws and regulations, 01· the 1·egulations of other
governmental bodies, their provisions carry the fllll legal allthority of the statllte. In such cases, any changes in those
AWS standards must Ье appгoved Ьу tl1e gove.-n111entaJ body haviпg statlltoгy jllrisdiction before they can become а

document that invokes the AWS standards. Where this contractual relationship exists, changes in or deviations from
requirements of an AWS standai·d 11шst Ье Ьу ag.гee111ent between the contracting paгties.

AWS Аmегiсап Natioпal Staпdai·ds are developed thгough а coпsensus standards developшent pгocess that briпgs

Foreword
This forewo1·d is not part of tl1is staпdard but is included for iпformatioпal purposes опlу.

Joiпing p1·ocesses and examinatioп methods саппоt take thei1· proper place as fabricating tools uпless meaпs аге provided
for coпveying iпfoпnatioп fiom the desigпe,· to joiniпg апd inspectioп persoппel. The symbols iп this puЫicatioп are
intended to Ье used to facilitate commttnicatioп fюm the designer to fabrication and inspection peгsonnel. Statements
sнch as "to Ье welded thюttghout" or "to Ье completely welded," оп а drawing have the effect of transfeпiпg the design
responsibility from the designer to production persoпnel, who саплоt Ье expected to kлow desigп requirements. lп the
interest of safety, using а ge11e1·al statemeпt is dangerous as the welder is поt expected to know the requirements of the weld.

This staпdard does not dictate welding tolerances, dimeпsioпs or design requiremeпts. Iпfoпnatioп pгesented l1eгein is to
show how to сопvеу tl1is iпformatioп.

The symbols presented in this standard were developed to provide the шеапs for placiпg welding, b1·azing, and nonde
structive exaшiпation iлformation оп two-dimeпsional drawiпgs. ln practice, many users will need only а fe\,; of the
symbols, and, ifthey desiгe, сап select опlу tl1e partsofthe system tl1at fit their needs. ApplicaЬility to three dimeпsioпal
digitaJ models is being reseaгched and will Ье covered more extensively iп ft1tш·e editions.

The puЫication AWS А2.4 саше iпto existence iп 1976 as а 1·esult of comЬiпing and superseding two earlier documents,
А2.0, Standarc/ Welding Symbols, апd А2.2, Nondestmctive Testing Symbols. Both of these еш·lу documeпts l1ad
theiг origins in work done jointly Ьу tbe American Welding Society and the American Staпdards Association (ASA)
SectionaJ Committee У32. AWS А2.О was first puЫished in 1947 and was revised in 1958 and 1968. AWS А2.2 first
appeared in 1958 and was 1·evised iп 1969.

The evolutioп of AWS А2.4, Staщ/ard Symbolsfor Welding, Brazing, cmd Nondestructive Testing, is shown below:

ANSI/АWS А2.4-76 Symbolsfor Welding and Nondestructive Testing;

AWS А2.4:2020 Bгazing, and Nondest1·uctive Examination; Standarcl Symbols fог Welding,
Bгazing, апс/ Nondestгuctive Examination.

This eighth edition of AWS А2.4 iпclttdes the following гevised сопtепt:

• Detailed usage for flш·e gгoove welds.

• Dia111eter symbol, 0. is now по loпger а part of the plug weld symbol as it was in the previot1s edition. However,
it is still needed when desigпating the plttg dimeпsioп оп the welding symbol.

• The tise of the сопtош symbol without а desigпated 111echaпical postweld finishing method previottsly meaпt that
the contour of the weld had to Ье obtaiпed Ьу weldiпg onlу. Tl1is requireщent по longer applies and now allows the
contoш·of the weld to Ье achieved Ьу any method (e.g., weldiпg ог mechaпical) as sееп fit at the work site. The flat
сопtош symbol is now limited to fillet welds, while tl1e flt1sl1symbol is used for other welds, such as groove, plug,
and slot.

• Combination groove weld symbol designating two diffei-eпt edge shapes. This is а major change iп wl1ich one
gюove weld symbol may Ье d1·awn backward (e.g., flai-e bevel and bevel) to demoпstrate actual configuration
of the weld joint.
• Tl1e use of multiple subreference lines to designate а groove weld extending around а joint where there is no
clear point where the joint transi6ons from one joint type to anotber.
• Spot апd seam welds-the ability to desigпate size or streпgth Ьу placi11g а value to the left of the weld symbol has
been modified. The dimeпsioп to tbe left of the weld syrnbol will only designate the size of the weld. If strengtl1 is
пeeded, this i11fo1matio11 will Ье required to Ье specified as а поtе iп the tail of the welding symbol.
• Flash and upset welding symbols are no longer suppoгted; therefore, the welding symbol if пeeded is recom
mended to Ье а reference line and arrow with either "FW" or "UW" designated in the tail of the welding
symbol.
• Figшes поw have пеw пumber desigпatioпs to 1·eflect the clause iп which they are 1·efere11ced.
• The clause for the symbol for пondestructive examinatioп has been rewritten and expanded.
Revisioпs to the 2020 editioп ai·e ideпtified Ьу unde1·li11es as well as vertical lines iп the margiп пехt to the figures.
Commeпts and suggestioпs t'or the improvemeпt of this standard are welcome. They shou\d Ье seпt to the Secretary,
AWS А2 Committee on Definitioпs апd Symbols, Americaп Welding Society, 8669 NW 36 St, # 130, Miami, FL 33166.

3. Terms and Definitions

AWS АЗ.ОМ/АЗ.О, Standard Welding Tem1,f and Definitions, pюvides the basis for teп11s and defi11itioпs t1sed heгein.
However, the followiпg teпns and definitions are iпcluded below to acco111modate usage specific to this docume11t.

examination method designation. А letter designatio11 iпcorporated iпto а symbol t·ог 11011destгuctive examiпatioп to
specify the examiпation method. See ТаЫе Аб.

supplementaгy symbol. А g1·aphic chai·acteг incorporated into а symbol for welding, brazing, or noпdestгuctive exami
nation to commнnicate additional 1·eqt1irements. See Figures 4.2 апd J7.2.

,veld symbol. А graphic character connected to the refe1·ence ! пе of а weldiпg symbol specifying the joint geometry ог
weld type. See also ,velding symbol.

welding symbol. А graphical representation of the specificationsfor producing а welded joint. See also ,veld symbol.

4. Basic Welding Symbols

4.1 Distinction Bet,veen Weld Symbol and Welding Symbol. As defined in AWS АЗ.ОМ/АЗ.О, there is а distinction
between the terms weld symbol апd welding symbol. The weld symbol indicates the type of weld and, when used, is а
part of the welding symbol.

4.2 Basis of Ref'eгence. In the present system, the joint is the basis of reference. The ai-row side is the side of the
joint to which the апоw of the welding symbol points. The other side is the side of the joint opposite the arrow side.

4.3 Weld Symbols. Weld symbols shall Ье as show11 iп Figure:!J.. The symbols sl1all Ье drawn iп contact with the
refeг ence line.

4.4 Supplementary Symbols. Supplementaгy symbols to Ье used iп connectioп with welding symbols shall Ье as slюwn
iп Figшe 4.2.

4.5 Welding Symbols. А welding symbol may consist of several elements (see Figure 4.3). Опlу а hor.izontal reference
line and tbe апоw аге required elements (see D4.5 in Аппех D fог com111entai-y оп use of just а refereпce line and
апоw). Additioпal eleme11ts may Ье i11cluded to convey specific weldi11g informatio11. Alteгnatively, weldiпg i11formation
may Ье conveyed Ьу other means such as Ьу drawing notes or details, specifications, standai:ds, codes, or othe1·drawings
that eli111i11ate the пееd to inclнde the correspoпdiпg elemeпts in the welding symbol.

The tail of the symbol is нsed for desigпating additio11al infoп11atio11 sucl1 as а specificatio11, process, stre11gth fог certaiп
welds, identification of the filleг metal 01· eJectrode, peening, backgouging, or other operatioлs or 1·efeгences necessai·y
for 111aking the weld 01· b!"aze.

All ele111ents, wl1e11t1sed, shall have specific locations within the weldiпg symbol as showп in Figure 4.3. Mandatory
requiгe111ents regarding each elemeпt in а weldiпg symbol refer to the location of the element and should not Ье iпter
preted as а necessity to include the e\ement iп every weldiпg symbol.

4.6 Welding Svmbol Placeшent. The arrow of the welding symbol shall point to а line, location, or area that
conclL1- sively identities the joint, locatioп, or area to Ье welded.
