HSC ANALYSIS - What to expect and common pitfalls

A.
Operations With Vectors (5.7%) has attracted 3 separate questions in both the 2021 and 2020 Ext1
exams, a majority of which have been multiple choice.
We expect this sub-topic to be the most consistently examined going forward, offering up band 3-4 B.
challenges to students. This is reflected in the size of the database.
Basic vector calculations (addition, subtraction and multiplication), angles between vectors, unit C.
vectors and projections have featured in the first two new syllabus Ext1 exams and are all well
represented in the database.
The 2020 vector projection question shows the advantage of a clear geometrical understanding of D.
this concept (see 2020 Ext1 9 MC).
Questions requiring the equivalence of the two scalar dot product formulae to solve problems is a
likely concept to be examined (as other States' exam history attests to). This question type is well
covered in the database.
Many teachers have provided feedback that column vector notation helps students visualise vector
calculations better and minimises errors. We agree and the worked solutions reflect this.
