Cold War Innovations: Sputnik to Tesla

THE SPUTNIK

The launch of the first Sputnik signaled the opening salvo in another phase of the Cold War
between the United States and the Soviet Union. Sergei Korolev founded and led the Soviet
space effort. He headed the design of the first intercontinental ballistic missile or (ICBM), the
Soviet R-7. Korolev also oversaw the R-7 rocket’s launch of the first Sputnik satellite.
SPUTNIK was a polished metal sphere 58 cm (23) in diameter with four external radio antennas
to broadcast radio pulses. Its radio signal was easily detectable by amateur radio operators, and
the 65° orbital inclination made its flight path cover virtually the entire inhabited Earth.

SEMI-AUTOMATED CAR
When we say semi- automated car, it is a combination of a manual and automatic gearbox. It
also has no clutch pedal, as is the case with the automatic. Because of this, it's really easy to
drive a semi-auto and you can also choose how to control the gears since there's a selection of
both manual and automatic options.
The vehicle reached speeds up to 30 kilometers per hour (19 mph) with the support of an
elevated rail.

TESLA MODEL S
The Tesla Model S is not a pod like transport, nor is it based on an existing economy car. It's a
large sedan with luxury leanings, eyebrow-raising performance and stunning good looks. By all
accounts, it's one of the best cars you can buy, electric or otherwise.
Standard safety features for all 2012 Tesla Model S variants include head, knee and pelvic
airbags for the front passengers as well as front and rear side curtain airbags. Also standard on
all models are stability and traction control, crash sensors for high-voltage disconnect, antilock
disc brakes and a rearview camera.
