MOUD Presentation

11/22/22
Karlina Milano
Community Agency Clinical Day

Discuss this agency in relation to acute care inpatient treatment offered for mentally

ill/substance abuse/homeless/isolated persons within the local community.

The Pregnant and Women’s Recovery Center is an acute care center that is for women of

all ages who have substance abuse disorders. This center provides medical resources for pregnant

women and just women in general who have opioid use disorder. MOUD stands for medicine for

opioid use disorder. This includes buprenorphine products and naltrexone, behavioral health

counseling, social support services and medical care for withdrawing. During pregnancy

withdrawal, the medical care helps to minimize fetal exposure to the substances and helps the

women and baby recover.

Identify usual mental health diagnoses served by this agency and the usual referral sources.

Opioid abuse disorder and substance abuse disorder are the main mental health diagnoses for this

center. It can also include depression and anxiety as well. This center provides sources to help

provide safe delivery for the women and fetus, and any after delivery plans. Also if the partner of

the pregnant women is abusing substances or opioids the center is able to help them as well and

find resources they need to recover.

Evaluate your experience in this community setting regarding the supportive services

provided to the person, his family and the community.

From watching this presentation, I learned a lot about how this program and center can really

help pregnant women recover from substance abuse disorders. I think this is an amazing program

for women because they are able to stop and recover from this illness and try and become the

best moms they can be for their baby. One main thing I learned though is about two medications
called buprenorphine and methadone. Buprenorphine which is a partial opioid agonist meaning it

binds to part of a receptor and methadone binds to the whole. Both are used for men and women

and pregnant women as well to help them control their addiction and slowly come off the

substance. Overall this was a good experience and I am glad I was able to watch this

presentation.
