American history, and celebrates the unity of people under God.

Hughes. He wrote about the black American struggle. This piece asks
for a world where ‘love will bless the earth’ and ‘every man is free’.
This poem was his plea for peace and love across the world.

Spirituals were an oral tradition of passing down Christian values
while also describing the hardships of slavery.
