1) Definition
Drama can be called as sandiwara. It is a story that is only certain people that knows it. Try
to find what things beyond the story or preaveling the secret of life. Wara is a story. Sandi
means a code.
2) History and elements of drama
Dramatic structure:
1. Introducing characters who have conflicts.
Starts from exposition where characters and conflict are introduce. Conflicts is a struggle
or a clash between opposing characters or forces. It can be developed between characters
who wants the same thing or different things, between a character and his or her
circumstances, and a character who is torn by competing desires or between characters to
themselves.
2. Complication
Tension builds.
3. Climax
Point of highest tension. Action determines how the conflict will be revolved. The
resolution can be seen through climax.
4. Resolution
Conflicts are resolved. Play ends.
3) Tragedy
Tragedy is a play that ends unhappily. Usually happens because of humans limitations. The
protagonist of a tragedy story is a tragic hero. They fight for pride, jealousy, rebelliousness.
4) Comedy
 A play that ends happily.
- Classic
The classics one usually a story of a men meet a girl, etc. The main characters can be
anyone.
- Modern comedy
(ex: warkop dki). The plot are mixed. Usually focus on ordinary people. Can be mixed
between comedy and tragedy. Sometimes it uses unconventional plot structures; long
flashback, music, visual projection of a character’s private thoughts.

5) Performance of a play
Actors, directors, lighting technician, and costumes.
6) Setting the stage

The stage can be realistic and detail or abstract and minimal.
