Air Brake Chambers Air brake chambers are located at each wheel where compressed air is converted into mechanical force to apply the brakes and stop the vehicle. There are two kinds of air brake chambers, service and spring brake chambers. A service brake chamber contains a flexible rubber disc called a diaphragm, a metal rod called a pushrod and a return spring. When you press the brake pedal, compressed air fills the service brake chamber, causing the diaphragm to move and push out the pushrod to apply the brakes. When air pressure is released, the pushrod is returned to its original position by the spring inside the Sertcavae gee chamber. me ostee Complete spring brake chamber and related components. Reill y/ANTO.PARTS. ‘As mentioned previously, there are two kinds of air brake chambers, service brake chambers and spring brake chambers which are shown below. Figure A shows the service brake chamber. The service brake chamber is used for normal braking applications. Figure A is most commonly located on the steer axle. Figure B and C are know as the complete spring brake chambers. Complete spring brake chambers are made up of a service brake chamber and a spring brake chamber. The spring brake chambers function is applying the brakes for parking the equipment. When the air is exhausted from the system, the spring within the spring brake chamber is released, forcing the brake shoes against the brake drums. There are several sizes of brake chambers. Along with the different sizes that brake chambers are available in, there are also different strokes. The most common strokes are Standard Stroke and Long Stroke. There are a couple of different ways to determine which stroke a specific brake chamber is but the most common is to refer to the ports on the side of the chamber where the air brake lines connect. If the ports are round as shown in figure A, the chamber is a standard stroke. If the ports are square as shown in figure B, the chamber is a long stroke. Please refer to page 72 of your Fleet, AG & Hydraulic Reference Guide for more information. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) has determined that long stroke chambers provide: « Improved Braking Efficiency * Improved Stopping Performance « Increased Reserve Stroke * Reduced Out-of- Adjustment Citations. | sd . z ©@Reiivyauro parts.
