1. INTRODUCTION

The rapid changes that society has experienced in the last decades have had a
strong impact upon the teaching curriculum. Present-day students face different
challenges than did previous generations, as our world leans towards greater
interconnectivity, gender equality and cultural diversity. The Organic Law
03/2020 of 29 December grows out of the conviction that these challenges need
to be addressed in the curriculum, and so it stresses the importance of ensuring an
adequate development of students’ plurilingual competence in order to increase
their chances of succeeding in the world of today.

In this light, topic 2 has a significant role in the English Curriculum, as it

explores key methodological approaches to foreign language teaching and
learning. Gaining an awareness of how languages are acquired can benefit both
teachers and students by providing them with a deeper insight into the teaching-
learning process. This will have an effect on the methodology and learning
materials selected, and will surely contribute to improving students’
communicative performance in their foreign language.
