Safe Spaces
As many prepare to return home for summer break, some of us are
leaving our safe spaces behind, which can be challenging. According

to the Oxford dictionary, a safe space is a place or environment where

a person or category of people can feel confident that they will not be
exposed to emotional or physical harm. Safe spaces can be all around
us, if we decide to cultivate them. For instance, libraries, parks, our
room, and even a crowded coffee shop, can be considered a safe

space if we make it so. It is important to create a place of safety within

ourselves where we feel protected, confident, and powerful because

everyone deserves space to feel like their true, authentic self.

Here are some tips on how to establish a safe space internally and
externally:
To create an internal safe space, acknowledge your thoughts and
feelings as valid and actively acknowledge positivity within and
around you
Learn to recognize and understand your triggers, and find healthy
coping skills that work for you
Finding a space that comforts you (ex. home, gym, car, beach,
etc. )
Finding spaces where others are in recovery or support recovery
such as recovery communities and engaging in activities without
substances
