YU ET AL: This paper proposes the novel testing of acidic environments around Ti implantable
materials has and how LPS affects the corrosion of Ti. LPS is often seen on dental implants,
and the gram negative bacteria it is associated with may affect corrosion resistance of the
metal. Immersion testing, surface characterization using scanning electron microscopy, and
electrochemical testing was done to observe leakage of Ti into the environment after
submerging in LPS-free or containing media at varying pH levels. Ti metals alone were
decreased at an environment above pH 4. LPS in the system reflected a decreased corrosion
rate at pH 2 and increase above pH 4. Inflammation conditions nearby the prosthesis or implant
may result in the acidification of the environment. Doctors should be careful about gram-
negative bacteria in the environment at pH 7 or allowing the LPS substance to remain at the site
during inflammatory periods to mitigate ion leakage.

FERREIRA ET AL: This paper proposes a novel strategy combining composite scaffold of 45S5
Bioglass with carbonate apatite and a collagen scaffold called OssiMend to improve the rate
and quality of human osteoblast fate differentiation, OssiMend Bioactive. Bioglass releases
silicone ion species and OssiMend releases phosphorous and was seen in past research to
promote deposition of calcium. It was theorized that differentiation of osteoblasts grown with
OssiMend Bioactive would proceed faster or more definitively than in the two scaffolds by
themselves. There was an upregulation in the markers aligned with bone mineralization of ECM
and later stage differentiation of osteoblasts with upregulated MMP14 and downregulated IGF2,
respectively. The mineralization theory was confirmed through mRNA testing. Bioactive glass,
with hydroxyapatite, and an already popular scaffold to proliferate bone growth could be useful
for quick mineral deposition. Perhaps this scaffold could be combined with a collagen Type I
matrix to enhance mouldable bone grafts.
