LL. 1800-493 \A 1) MAIN REDUCTION GEAR GENERAL The main gear unit has the function of transmitting the torque from the gas turbine to the driven apparatus at the speed requirements of the driven apparatus. The principal parts of the main gear as illustrated are the housing base and cover, the gear, pinion, and the bearings. HOUSING The housing is split in the horizontal plane through the axis of the pinion and gear wheel, thus forming a base and cover. The base, when bolted in place, form a rigid support to prevent housing distortion and to facilitate alignment. The bearing covers are integral with the housing cover. GEAR AND PINION ‘The gear and pinion are machined in matched sets, their teeth being of the double helical involute type cut on hobbing machines. With this double helical gear tooth arrangement the right and left hand helices balance the axial thrust, thereby eliminating the need for thrust surfaces on the bearings. BEARINGS The gear and pinion bearings are of the sleeve type consisting of a steel shell lined with tin-base babbitt. Each shell is split horizontally to form a top and bottom half doweled to maintain alignment. The cover portion of each bearing is doweled in such a manner to prevent, improper assembly of the bearing in the housing. The pinion bearings are reversed end for end so that the relieved portion of both bearings faces the driven gear. This does not hold true for the gear bearings which have their relieved portion in the top half of the bearing. Both the top and bottom halves of the pinion and gear bearings are provided with eyebolt holes to facilitate removal. LL. 1800-493 LUBRICATION The gear and pinion teeth and the bearings are supplied with metered lubricating oil from the main lubricating oil system. The oil spray which lubricates the gear teeth is so located that the gear and pinion teeth are lubricated simultaneously as they enter into mesh. Any oil leaking outward along the journal surfaces is thrown off into the gear housing base and then drains back to the oil reservoir. Oil seals are provided to prevent oil leakage externally along the gear shaft. INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE ‘The main gear assembly should be dis- mantled and thoroughly cleaned and inspected at least once a year, depending on the accumulated operating time and severity of operating conditions. The bearings, gear wheel, and pinion are accessible for inspection by removing the gear housing cover. Gear Teeth Examine the gear and pinion teeth for wear at their contact surfaces. A certain amount of smoothing and polishing can be expected during “running in” of new gear sets. The combined action of rolling and sliding the teeth will smooth out imperfections of manufacture and give the working surfaces a high polish. Under continued proper operating conditions the gear teeth should show little or no sign of wear. Check the gear teeth for surface deterioration and for breakage and cracks. Under surface deterioration look for abnormal ‘wear, abrasive or scratching wear, and overload wear. Exercise care when handling the gear or pinion asa light blow may injure the teeth. Bearings The most common cause for suspicion of bearing difficulty is a sudden or abnormal rise in the bearing temperature, which is generally detected by a rise in temperatuse of the housing parts immediately surrounding the 1 MAIN REDUCTION GEAR bearing. The usual practice is to replace or Item Description renew the bearing surfaces at the time of overhaul when they show signs of excessive 9 — Jackshaft and Pinion wear, edge loading, fatigue, scoring, or | 10 Bearing, Pinion (Coupling End) improper clearance.
