Control of Photovoltaic Inverters for Transientand Voltage Stability

Enhancement
Objective: The main objective of this project is to , improve the transient stability and enhance
the voltage stability of solar PV system.
Abstract:
The increasing number of megawatt-scale Photovoltaic (PV) power plants and other
largeinverter-based power stations that are being added to the power system are leading to
changes in the waythe power grid is operated. In response to these changes, new grid code
requirements establish that inverter basedpower stations should not only remain connected to the
grid during faulty conditions but, also providedynamic support. This feature is referred in the
literature to as momentary cessation operation. The fewpublished studies about momentary
cessation operation for PV power plants have not shed much light on theimpact of these systems
on the overall power system stability problem. As an attempt to address this issue, this project
proposes a control scheme for PV inverters that improves the transient stability of a
synchronousgenerator connected to the grid. It is shown through the paper that the proposed
control scheme makes thePV inverter's dc link capacitors absorb some of the kinetic energy
stored in the synchronous machine duringmomentary cessation. Besides that, the proposed
solution is also able to improve voltage stability throughthe injection of reactive power.
simulation results are presented in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control
scheme.
Keywords:Photovoltaic generation, synchronous machine, transient stability, voltage stability.
Existing System:
In existing method The influences of synchronous, asynchronous, and inverter-interfaced DG
units on transient and voltage stabilities were investigated based on a time-domain simulation .
The simulation considered different DG penetration levels under various contingencies and
monitored the rotor speed deviation of conventional generators. In addition, a method for
achieving transient stability in distribution networks with DGs was proposed using a network
simplification technique.
Disadvantages:
 Voltage stability not improved significantly.
 It impact of an inverter’s operating modes on the power system stability.
 Efficiency is low
Proposed System:
This project proposes an FRT control schemebased on the absorption of the kinetic energy stored
in theSM's rotating mass to ensure transient stability. The proposedcontrol scheme also improves
voltage stability and its postfaultrecovery through the delivery of reactive power into thegrid.
When using the proposed scheme, the SM active poweroutput is increased close to its pre-fault
value, recoveringthe balance between the SM electrical power and mechanicalpower, what
decelerates the rotor angular speed that, in turn, reduces the rotor angle excursions.

Advantages:
 Improves voltage stability
 And its postfault recovery through the delivery of reactive power into the grid.
 The SM active poweroutput is increased close to its pre-fault value, recoveringthe
balance between the SM electrical power and mechanicalpower.

Applications:
Solar PVSystems can be applied for variable-speed drives and electronic devices such as
computers, printers, TVs, servers and telecoms systems that use Switched-Mode Power Supply
(SMPS) power conversion technologies.
