The research article titled "Medical Students' Career Choice and Attitudes towards Family Medicine in

Morocco" aimed to assess Moroccan medical students' perceptions and attitudes towards general
medicine as a career choice and the factors associated with their decision-making process. The study
was conducted in the context of the healthcare system reform in Morocco, which included the creation
of family medicine as a specialty. A total of 280 medical students from public medical schools in Morocco
were surveyed using an online self-administered questionnaire in August 2019. The results showed that
although only 6.4% of the students chose general medicine as a career choice after graduation, almost a
third (27.5%) would choose to become a general practitioner if it becomes a specialty. Factors associated
with choosing general practice as a career were ambition for career development, income, and personal
experience as a student or patient in contact with a general practitioner. However, the prestige given to
specialists and the devalued status of general practitioners in the healthcare system were major barriers
to choosing general medicine as a career. The study recommends improving recruitment in general
medicine by improving placement sites in primary care, increasing contact with competent GPs, and
creating a family medicine specialty.
