Chapter 9

Witnessing

Jesus wants us to tell people about Him… how

Matthew 11: 5-6 “The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf
hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them. 6 And
blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.”

You can tell people what Jesus did while here on earth and you can tell people about
what Jesus has done for you. If the person you are telling about Jesus does not accept
you and your witnessing, don’t worry about it… This is what Jesus says about that:

Matthew 10:14 “And whoever will not receive you nor hear your words, when you
depart from that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.”

In other words, tell people about Jesus. Don’t worry if the people don’t like what you are
saying, just leave. What you have done is bring attention to that person and God takes
care of the rest. People don’t save people, God saves people. You bring them to God
and let them go. He meets them where they are.

As disciples, we can plant a seed in someone or water a new believer, but Jesus saves.

Matthew 13:19 “When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand
it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he
who received seed by the wayside.
Jesus tells in Matthew 13 a parable about sewing seed (seed being the Word of God being
told to a person)

Ask the Holy Spirit to help you witness, then just watch what happens. The Holy Spirit
teaches you daily.

John 14:26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He
will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

Luke 10:21 Thank you Father for revealing hidden things to babes
John 3:11, 12 “Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what
We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness. 12If I have told you earthly things and
you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?”
Note that We and Our is capitalized, this means that Jesus is speaking of the Holy Trinity
and when They speak to someone. So if people don’t understand when Jesus Himself
speaks, then they might not understand you. Still don’t worry because everyone you
speak to about Jesus, Jesus is there with you and He will stay with that person because
Jesus meets you where you are.

72
John 1:4, 5 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5And the light shines in the
darkness, and the darkness does not comprehend it.

Mark 1:17 Then Jesus said to them,” Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of
men.”
Mark 1:38 But He said to them, “Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there
also, because for this purpose I have come forth”
Mark 4:20 “But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who bear the word,
accept it and bear fruit; some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.”
Sometimes you sow on good ground. You might never get to see the thirtyfold or sixty
or a hundredfold. You have to let God take it from where you left off.

Mark 4:23, 24 “If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.” 24Then He said to them, “Take
heed what you hear. With the same measure you use, it will be measured to you; and to
you who hear, more will be given.”
Ears to hear and eyes to see is Jesus’ way of saying that you understand Him and
scripture. Also understand to use scripture to fight evil and know that the evil one will
come after you if you want to witness for Jesus. Jesus gave us examples of how to
conduct ourselves and be like Him. He was baptized as an example to us that we should
obey God. He was led into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil as an example to us
on how to oppose the devil.

Mark 5:8 & 19 For He said to him, “Come out of the man, unclean spirit!” …19However,
Jesus did not permit him, (to go with Him) “Go home to your friends, and tell them what
great things the Lord has done for you, and how he has had compassion on you.”

Mark 6:10, 111 Also He said to them, “In whatever place you enter a house, stay there till
you depart from that place. 11And whoever will not receive you nor hear you (tell about
Jesus’ commands), when you depart from there, shake off the dust under your feet as a
testimony against them.”
Mark 7:14-16 When He had called all the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear
Me, everyone, and understand; 15There is nothing that enters a man from outside which
can defile him; but the things which come out of him, those are the things that defile a
man. 16If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear!”
Be careful of what you say, Jesus said what comes out of a man is what defiles him.

Only God saves

2 Timothy 1:8, 9 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His
prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of
God, 9who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but
according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before
time began.
…who has saved us and called us. This is a letter from one apostle to another. If you
feel called then just go with it. You will suffer in this life, but God is with you. You will
suffer more because you witness for God, but God is with you.

73
Ephesians 2: 8, 9 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of
yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9not of works, lest anyone should boast.

Jesus’ commands pertaining to witnessing:

Matthew 10:17 “But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils and
scourge you in the synagogues.”
Matthew 10:27 “Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in
the ear, preach on the housetops.”
Matthew 15:14 is Jesus explaining to disciples what to do about people that are like these
Pharisees and scribes.
Matthew 15:14 “Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind,”
Matthew 26:41 “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is
willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Watch and pray was one of the last things Jesus told us to do. Sometimes you will see
things that you just don’t know what to do about it. Pray.
Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been
given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19”Go therefore and make disciples of all the
nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you
always, even to the end of the age.” Amen
This command was given after Jesus was resurrected and came back and was with us 40
days. Then He ascended to heaven before Pentecost. Pentecost is a celebration 50 days
after the Passover. Passover is when the people of God were slaves in Egypt and God
sent the Angel of death to Egypt and told His people to smear the blood of the lamb on
the doorposts and death would not come to their children. Pentecost 50 days later was a
Jewish celebration ordered by God to His people to make a sacrifice. Passover was a
sacrifice for saving the people and Jesus was celebrating Passover in the last supper (this
is Good Friday) 50 days after Jesus was sacrificed the Holy Spirit came on the people that
believed in Jesus.
(corresponds with Luke 24:46-49)

Mark 1:17 Then Jesus said to them,” Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of
men.”
Mark 1:38 But He said to them, “Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there
also, because for this purpose I have come forth”
Mark 4:20 “But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who bear the word,
accept it and bear fruit; some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.”
Mark 4:23, 24 “If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.” 24Then He said to them, “Take
heed what you hear. With the same measure you use, it will be measured to you; and to
you who hear, more will be given.”
Mark 5:8 & 19 For He said to him, “Come out of the man, unclean spirit!” …19However,
Jesus did not permit him, (to go with Him) “Go home to your friends, and tell them what
great things the Lord has done for you, and how he has had compassion on you.”

74
Mark 7:14-16 When He had called all the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear
Me, everyone, and understand; 15There is nothing that enters a man from outside which
can defile him; but the things which come out of him, those are the things that defile a
man. 16If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear!”
Mark 8:38 For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful
generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of
His Father with the holy angels.”
Mark 9:36, 37 Then He took a little child and set him in the midst of them. And when He
had taken him in His arms, He said to them, 37”Whoever receives one of these little
children in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me, receives not Me but Him
who sent Me.”
Mark 9:39-42 But Jesus said, “Do not forbid him, for no one who works a miracle in My
name can soon afterward speak evil of Me. 40For he who is not against us is on our side.
41For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in My name, because you belong to
Christ, assuredly, I say to you he will by no means lose his reward. 42 But whoever causes
one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him if a
millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea.”
Mark 9:49, 50 “For everyone will be seasoned with fire, and every sacrifice will be
seasoned with salt. 50Salt is good, but if the salt loses its flavor, how will you season it?
Have salt in yourselves, and have peace with one another?
Mark 10:26, 27 And they were greatly astonished, saying among themselves, “Who then
can be saved?” 27But Jesus looked at them and said, “With men it is impossible, but not
with God; for with God all things are possible.”
Mark 13:13 “And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the
end shall be saved.”
Mark 16:15-18 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to
every creature. 16He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not
believe will be condemned. 17And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name
they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18they will take up serpents;
and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on
the sick, and they will recover.”

Luke 5:10b …And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid. From now on you will
catch men.”
Luke 8:39 “Return to your own house, and tell what great things God has done for you.”
And he went his way and proclaimed throughout the whole city what great things Jesus
had done for him.
Luke 9:50 But Jesus said to him, “Do not forbid him, for he who is not against us is on
our side.”
Luke 10:2-11 & 16 Then He said to them, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers
are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. 3Go
your way; behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves. 4Carry neither money bag,
knapsack, nor sandals; and greet no one along the road. 5But whatever house you enter,
first say, ‘Peace to this house.” 6And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on it;
if not, it will return to you. 7And remain in the same house, eating and drinking such
things as they give, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to

75
house. 8Whatever city you enter and they receive you, eat such things as are set before
you, 9and heal the sick there, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to
you.’ 10But whatever city you enter, and they do not receive you, go out into its streets
and say, 11’’The very dust of your city which clings to us we wipe off against you.
Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near you.’…16”He who hears
you hears Me, he who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who
sent Me.”
Luke 10:37 And he said, ‘He who showed mercy on him.’ Then Jesus said to him, “Go
and do likewise.”
Luke 12:1b He began to say to His disciples first of all, “Beware of the leaven of the
Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.”
Luke 12:11, 12 “Now when they bring you to the synagogues and magistrates and
authorities, do not worry about how or what you should answer, or what you should say.
12For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”
Luke 24:46- 49 Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for
the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, 47and that repentance and
remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
48And you are witnesses of these things. 49Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon
you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”

John 6:27 “Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to
everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His
seal on Him”
John 7:29 “But I know Him, for I am from Him, and He sent Me.”
John 7:37, 38 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out,
saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38He who believes in Me, as the
Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”
John 8:42 & 47 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I
proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me… 47He
who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of
God.”
John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the
Father except through Me.”
John 14:16, 17 “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He
may abide with you forever- 17the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because
it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will
be in you.”
John 14:26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He
will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”
John 15:27 “And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the
beginning.”
John 20:21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I
also send you.”
John 20:27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands;
and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but
believing.”

76
Acts 1:7, 8 And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the
Father has put in His own authority. 8But you shall receive power when the Holy Sprit
has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and
Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Acts 10:15 And a voice spoke to him again the second time, “What God has cleansed you
must not call common.”
What God has cleansed is speaking of people that have come to God. These people
might have been someone you thought of as common in the past, but don’t make that
mistake while witnessing. You have no idea where people are at with God, only God
knows. Treat everyone the same because God does not show partiality.
Acts 18:9,10 Now the Lord spoke to Paul in the night by a vision, “Do not be afraid, but
speak, and do not keep silent; 10for I am with you, and no one will attack you to hurt you;
for I have many people in this city.”
Acts 22:21 then He said to me (Paul), “Depart, for I will send you far from here to the
Gentiles.”
Acts 26:16-18 “But rise and stand on your feet; for I have appeared to you for this
purpose, to make you a minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen and
of the things which I will yet reveal to you. 17I will deliver you from the Jewish people, as
well as from the Gentiles, to whom I now send you, 18to open their eyes, in order to turn
them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive
forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.”
