Glossary

1. Internacional Airport
Any airport that has adequate facilities for international air traffic and that the Contracting
State in whose territory it is located designates as an airport of entry or exit for international
air traffic; in which customs, immigration, sanitation, agricultural quarantine and other
similar procedures are carried out as required.

2. Control area
Controlled airspace extending upward from a specified boundary on the ground.

3. Auxiliary Base (Sub-base)

It is the place where the operator has control of operations, additional to its main base, for
some of its aircraft to stay overnight, having maintenance facilities to perform at least the line
work required by such aircraft. At least one of the aircraft operated by the company will
usually operate at the auxiliary base.

4. Air traffic control

Service operated by the competent authority to promote timely, safe and orderly air traffic
flow.
5. Magnus effect
Current perpendicular to the relative wind capable of causing lift in a gyroplane.

6. Fumigation
Action by which particles are distributed or spread in gaseous form (fumes, vapor). The
substance may be solid or liquid in nature or a mixture of them and, due to its extremely low
boiling point, quickly passes into gaseous form.

7. Frequency
The number of round trips an airline makes on a route during a given period.

8. Aeronautical functions
Functions for which an aeronautical license is required in accordance with these Aeronautical
Regulations.
9. Estimated Time of Arrival
For IFR flights, the time at which the aircraft is expected to arrive over a designated point,
defined with reference to navigation aids, from which an instrument approach procedure will
commence, or, if the aerodrome is not equipped with navigation aids, the time at which the
aircraft will arrive over the aerodrome. For VFR flights, the time at which the aircraft is
expected to arrive over the aerodrome.

10. Cut-off time

Arrival. The latest time until which aircraft can land at the destination aerodrome, relative to
sunset or sunrise (dead - line).

11. Estimated time of approach

The time at which ATC anticipates that an arriving aircraft, after having experienced a delay,
will leave the holding point to complete its approach for landing.

12. Runway lights

Surface aeronautical lights arranged along a runway to indicate its direction or limits.
13. Approach angle lights
A properly calibrated system of lights giving a constant rate of descent for final approach.

14. Airline
Commercial public transportation air service company.

15. Aircraft engine

Engine used or intended to power an aircraft including turbochargers, components and
accessories necessary for its operation, excluding propellers.
16. Altitude engine
An aircraft reciprocating engine, or one that has a rated takeoff power that can be obtained
from sea level and maintained to a higher established altitude.

17. Airborne Navigation (RNAV)

A method of navigation that allows aircraft operations on any desired course, within range of
the coverage of a reference station with navigation signals or within the limits of a self-
controlled system.

18. Special aerial work operator

Operator of an aircraft involved in commercial air services of special aerial work, in any of
its modalities.

19. Air transport operator

Operator of an aircraft engaged in commercial air services for scheduled or non-scheduled
public transport of passengers, mail or cargo.
20. Taxiing
Self-propelled movement of an aircraft over the surface of an aerodrome, excluding takeoff
and landing but, in the case of helicopters; including movement over the surface of an
aerodrome within a height band associated with ground effect and at speed associated with
taxiing, i.e., aerial taxiing.

21. Take-off surface

Part of the aerodrome surface that the aeronautical authority has declared as usable for the
normal ground run of aircraft taking off in a given direction.

22. Landing Surface

Part of the aerodrome surface that the aeronautical authority has declared as usable for the
normal ground run of aircraft landing in a given direction.
23. Aeronautical Information Service (AIS)
Service established within the defined coverage area in charge of providing the aeronautical
information and data necessary for the safety, regularity and efficiency of air navigation
(Note: Definition introduced pursuant to Article 1 of Resolution No. 02844 of June 24, 2005.
Published in the Official Gazette No. 45,952 of June 27, 2005).

24. Air transportation
