Center Rationale
I created this literacy center this year to accomplish two common
core objectives and one common core shift. The two common core
objectives that are met during this collaborative literacy center are:
CCSS.L.5 – Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word
relationships, and nuances in word meanings…
some grade levels refer to the word relationships as “shades of
meaning,” other grade levels refer to it as synonyms and antonyms,
and some grade levels refer to it as “connotations (associations) of
words with similar denotations (definitions). …However it is referred
to at your grade level, students have an independent yet collaborate
opportunity to explore the relationship between similar words.
CCSS.SL.1 – Engage effectively in a range of collaborative
discussions….and follow agreed upon rules for discussion… For this
center, students must work together towards the common goal, listen
to one another and participate in a group discussion.
This vocabulary center does not just stop in asking students to rank
and sort the similar words in order, it also requires students to justify
the order in which they are placed. If students do not agree with
each other, they should continue to discuss opinions and reasons until
all voices are heard and consensus on word meaning and word order
can be reached. Critical thinking is analyzing and evaluating responses
of peers; an essential 21st century skill in the Common Core and in
life..And key to critical thinking is empathy; the ability to understand
and share the feelings of another…also referred to by industry as
“soft skills”, also known as Emotional Intelligence.

Center Materials
& Set-Up
There is a year’s worth of material for this center, 38 weeks. The
weekly routine will remain the same, but the words and discussions will
change. The word cards for each week can be printed on cardstock
(or not), then cut apart and paper-clipped together for the week. If
you don’t have a color printer for the Header and Footer words, it’s
ok, you don’t really need it. The header cards will be placed at the top
and bottom of a pocket chart. A pocket chart with at least 10 vertical
slots works best for this. However, a pocket chart is not necessary,
the cards can be laid out on the floor or on a table. Each week’s
accompanying sheet will be completed by students AFTER they have
worked together and discussed the order that the words should be
placed in. An accordion file works well to print and copy everything at
the beginning of the year, and then pull one set out each week.
Students should have a clear understanding of what each word means
and be able to justify either individually or collectively as a group, why
the words are placed in the order that they are. On the center sheet,
the left column is for students to record the most to least words and
the right column is for students to JUSTIFY why each word is above
and below the other words, and tell their thinking or the group’s
thinking about the word placement. I either have a dictionary or an
iPod at this center for students to access when they encounter
unfamiliar words. All of the vocabulary words in this packet are
considered Tier 2 vocabulary words. After the sheet is complete, they
can also (up to you) add these words to their vocabulary notebook or
record them in some other place that you would like them to.

day I introduced “how” to have group the center. Mostly standing, discussing,
discussions at a literacy center. My looking up words, agreeing, disagreeing
CC Rules for Discussion cards work …everyone engaged and reaching
well here too. consensus on the meanings & order.

This is what the sheets might look from this center to their
like after students have discussed vocabulary notebook (which all
word order and completed the of my students keep in a
center discussion. black/white comp book).

Center Set-up
This is what my Shades of Meaning Center looks like this year (’13-’14). (You’ll
notice on the last slide what the center looked like last year). As I introduce the
various centers that students will be doing while I’m doing small group instruction, I
spend a week AT the center WITH students as each group rotates through it. I
model how to facilitate the discussion so they see and hear how it’s supposed to
look and sound when I’m not there.

The week I introduce
this, this center IS my
“guided reading” for
the week until all
groups rotate through
it. It’s not traditional guided reading at a horse shoe table, but it is
guided scaffolded instruction in vocabulary work. I work with
students explaining “How to Do” the center and facilitate the
conversation and explain that the next time they do the center, I will
observe from behind while one of them facilitates the conversation.
By round 3, they are set to work at it cooperatively and
independently without me. To begin, each student holds a word.
Each student takes a turn telling what they think that word means
and/or giving an example. Every students adds to and builds on the
first meaning given. Then, as a group we decide where on the
pocket chart it should go. Then, we start on word 2, reach a
mutual understanding of the word and debate it’s placement against
the first word. We continue this discussion, agreement, ranking and
justification pattern until all words are placed into the pocket chart.
Once the words are set, students begin completing the sheet. .
